The Transformative 7-Step Morning Routine That Changed My Life
Written on
The Importance of a Morning Routine
During the COVID-19 lockdown, I took a significant step by establishing a morning routine. I immersed myself in books, articles, and podcasts to determine which practices would be most beneficial. Through experimentation, I fine-tuned my routine, unaware that it would profoundly alter the course of my life.
Why Morning Routines Matter
The way you start your morning sets the tone for your entire day. As Annie Dillard aptly states, “How we spend our days is of course how we spend our lives.” This highlights the power of the first hour after waking; it can either propel you forward or hold you back. By incorporating productive actions at the beginning of your day, you can set yourself up for success.
I began my routine without fully understanding its importance; I simply enjoyed having tasks to focus on each morning. The lockdown likely played a significant role in my desire to establish this routine. Initially, I omitted the final step, but as I progressed, I found clarity and direction in my life. I began to appreciate who I was becoming and the life I was building, ultimately fueling my passion for self-improvement.
Now, I am proud to write full-time for myself. Here's how I achieved this transformation:
Hydration
Staying hydrated is crucial. After sleeping for 7-8 hours, your body is in need of water. Aim to drink 1-2 large glasses of filtered water, perhaps with a pinch of mineral salt or a splash of lemon juice. Starting your day hydrated enhances your mental clarity and overall well-being.
Movement
Following hydration, it's essential to engage in physical activity. I used to walk down 400 stairs to the beach and back, but even a quick 10-20 minute session of light exercise can suffice. Whether you choose to walk, jog, do yoga, or any other form of movement, it’s important to get your blood flowing. This practice signals to your body that it's time to wake up and will enhance your overall health.
Coffee
After my morning exercise, I savor my coffee. The ritual of brewing a fresh cup is a highlight of my routine. Coffee offers several health benefits and can be a moment of mindfulness. The process of making coffee allows me to slow down and appreciate the moment. I encourage you to take time to enjoy your coffee fully—notice its aroma, warmth, and taste.
Reading
While enjoying my coffee, I dedicate time to reading, often non-fiction. I focus on uplifting content to set a positive tone for my day. Avoid distractions like your phone in the morning; instead, immerse yourself in something that enriches your mind. This habit is especially beneficial in a world full of external stressors.
Meditation
Following reading, I engage in meditation. Initially, I dabbled in it, but I became serious about incorporating it into my routine during the pandemic. Meditation helps cultivate a sense of well-being that remains unaffected by outside circumstances. It fosters self-awareness and emotional balance.
To start a meditation practice, consider these steps:
- Begin small; even a minute can be beneficial.
- Choose a consistent time each day.
- Commit to regular practice to experience long-term benefits.
- Utilize meditation apps to support your journey.
Journaling
Journaling marked a pivotal change in my life. After exercising, consuming positive inputs, and meditating, my thoughts became clearer. Initially, I wrote freely, but my focus shifted towards planning and prioritizing tasks. Reflecting on my goals helped me realize that I could create a life beyond the conventional path.
Writing
Writing solidified my transformation. After reading inspiring articles, I began to write myself, sharing insights from my self-improvement journey. The exhilaration of earning my first paycheck as a writer was overwhelming. As my writing income grew, it eventually surpassed my full-time job earnings, leading me to pursue writing wholeheartedly.
Through my morning routine, I’ve cultivated habits that empower me to aim higher and live more intentionally. While your ideal routine may differ, experimenting with various practices can lead to significant life changes in a matter of months.
