Elevate Your Public Speaking Skills with This Six-Step System

Chapter 1: Overcoming Public Speaking Anxiety

“How can I speak in front of an audience when I'm completely inexperienced?”

Take a deep breath, relax your shoulders, and strike a confident pose for a few moments (good luck if someone walks in on you). Everything will be fine.

Sounds straightforward, right?

However, let’s be honest: pretending to be confident won’t cut it if (A) you lack a solid base or (B) don’t possess specific skills.

Let me share a bit about myself.

I’m a quintessential introvert. From my teenage years, I’ve gradually honed my introverted nature through passion and perseverance.

I’ve reached a point where I can spend days without interacting with anyone (which is one less concern for my girlfriend, I suppose).

So, you can imagine the anxiety I felt when I unexpectedly found myself on stage before hundreds of high school students, all staring at me.

It was just a couple of weeks ago.

My friend, who was both the speaker and organizer, had invited me merely as a guest. I was there only for the complimentary food.

Instead, I ended up as a sitting target surrounded by a rowdy crowd of teenagers (whom I consider the toughest audience). One wrong move, and they could turn chaotic.

It was, by all definitions, the moment to panic and question my self-worth.

But that’s not what unfolded.

By the time I stepped off the stage, the applause was noticeably louder than for my friend and some other speakers.

A few students even approached me for my blog link.

So, how did that happen?

I had no preparation, no groundwork, and absolutely nothing to rely on. How did I not just survive but also leave a mark on the audience?

It turned out I was adhering to the right framework, which allowed me to become a more impactful speaker rather than just a louder one.

Section 1.1: Thoughtfulness in Delivery

To effectively communicate, we must first consider the substance of what we're saying.

Otherwise, if you charmingly present a well-packaged lie, it won’t resonate.

Your audience isn’t a bunch of fools. Respect their intelligence, and they will reciprocate.

How do you achieve this?

You need to possess enough logical depth. This is the easiest way to support your claims and connect with diverse opinions. Here’s how to get there.

Step 1: Cultivate Exceptional Listening Skills

Reading can be transformative—there’s no denying that. It’s a powerful way to tap into the wisdom of great thinkers.

But why limit yourself? Why not also listen to them discuss their ideas?

Thanks to the internet, you can easily access talks from scientists, authors, entrepreneurs, and more, diving deep into various subjects—all for free.

This exposure enhances your understanding of different conversational styles, speech patterns, and body language, improving your speaking skills effortlessly.

However, it doesn’t have to be limited to YouTube videos or podcasts; everyday conversations can also be enlightening.

By becoming an attentive listener, you learn to read people beyond their words, gaining insight into their motivations and behaviors.

Step 2: Go Beyond Surface Knowledge

Some individuals get defensive when faced with questions or differing opinions because they seek to win rather than engage in dialogue.

They often confuse their misguided beliefs for facts, thinking they are always correct.

But we don’t enjoy listening to them, do we?

Many people possess knowledge, but often it’s only superficial.

Simply being aware of the facts isn’t enough; you must also seek to understand the underlying reasons and mechanisms.

To excel in conversations, you need to grasp not only what things are but also how and why they function.

The challenge for most isn’t a lack of intelligence but rather a reluctance to confront the possibility of being wrong.

Thus, you must approach discussions with flexibility, open-mindedness, and a child-like curiosity.

Step 3: Teach What You Learn

There's a common belief that teaching is one of the best ways to master a subject. It makes sense when you think about it.

When you articulate something, it becomes easier to identify gaps in your understanding and explore new facets of the topic.

If you can’t distill complex ideas into simple terms for others to grasp, then your understanding might not be as solid as you think.

For me, exploring new topics and sharing them here has equipped me to dissect subjects and reconstruct them with ease.

So, when I unexpectedly found myself on stage, all I had to do was verbalize what I had been contemplating for the past week.

If you lack an audience to teach, don’t worry—simply pretend to teach, and it will still be beneficial.

Section 1.2: Executing Effectively in Any Situation

Until now, I’ve discussed how I leveraged my introverted traits to my advantage. However, extroverts often have a natural edge here.

What if you’re not an extrovert?

Instead of suppressing your nature, channel your adrenaline positively.

Step 1: Turn Nervousness into Excitement

Clinical Psychologist Hendrie Weisinger, in his book Performing Under Pressure, emphasizes:

“There’s no pressure. It’s going to be fun, a great game, and I look forward to meeting the challenge.”

When a presenter tries to calm their nerves, audiences may perceive them as lacking confidence.

Research indicates that replacing calmness with excitement can boost your confidence by 15% and your persuasiveness by 17%.

In exams, students who approached the situation with excitement scored 22% higher than those who stayed calm in the face of anxiety.

So, the next time you sense stage fright, don't try to soothe it—transform it into excitement.

From my experience, this approach works wonders.

Step 2: Own Your Experience

I learned this from a Joe Rogan podcast featuring Guy Ritchie, who discussed the themes from the book Extreme Ownership:

“You can’t just walk into things with your eyes half-open. You’ve got to know what you’re getting into.”

Even though I was hesitant about stepping on stage, once I committed, I made it my goal to embrace the experience.

I approached the stage without fear or hesitation.

Why should I? I was in control, and I wanted to make a positive impact.

Step 3: Engage Your Audience

One major reason for my previous fears was my perception of the audience as adversaries.

You know you’re in this mindset when you ask yourself, “What will they think of me?” or “What if they laugh?”

This perspective is limiting.

Instead, consider your audience as friends you’ve known forever.

But how can you achieve that familiarity? While you may not know them personally, you can relate to their experiences.

For me, discussing the shortcomings of our education system resonated well since these students were nearing graduation and preparing to face similar challenges.

By choosing a conversational tone rather than a preachy one, I fostered a genuine dialogue.

I spoke as if I were having a one-on-one conversation, shared jokes as I would with friends, paused to answer questions, and truly cared about the topic.

Unlike other speakers, I wasn't there to lecture, and the students could sense that.

What do you know about the "Lollapalooza effect"?

If this concept is new to you, it was coined by investor Charlie Munger.

This effect suggests that the outcome of multiple factors combined is greater than their individual contributions. It can have positive or negative implications.

How does it occur?

When one variable gains strength, it enhances the potential of the next, creating a compounding effect.

If you continually make poor decisions, the results can be disastrous. Conversely, consistently taking the right actions over time can yield remarkable results.

Follow this framework for a few months, and see if you don’t notice significant improvements—both in what you say and how you say it.
