Thinking of Freelancing? Now's the Time to Take Action!

Chapter 1: Why Start Freelancing Immediately
When I began my journey as a voice-over artist, I had no business acumen and even less knowledge about voiceover work. However, I was motivated to create my own income after being let go from my corporate position. What I did possess was a willingness to learn and a strong resilience against setbacks. Instead of hesitating, I jumped straight into freelancing. Here’s why you should do the same!
Section 1.1: Common Barriers to Starting Freelancing
The most frequent excuses I encounter for not starting are:
- I lack a niche
- I don’t have enough time
- I fear failure
Let’s break down these misconceptions and show you why they shouldn’t stop you from beginning today!
Subsection 1.1.1: Don't Have a Niche? No Problem!
Procrastination is a common challenge, but it can significantly hinder your potential for a better life. Many people hesitate to choose a freelance service, and I can relate. When I started, I had no formal training in voice-over work. However, I had produced a few YouTube videos and enjoyed the process, receiving positive feedback that motivated me to begin.
Ask yourself: - What activities do you enjoy? - What skills do you possess? - How can you leverage those skills in a freelance capacity?
Start Broad Initially, I focused solely on British voice-over work. Over time, as I gained experience and identified my strengths, I began to specialize in audiobook narration and eLearning content.
Today, my audiobook narration is one of my top services! I recommend checking out the main categories on Fiverr’s homepage for inspiration on potential niches you might enjoy.
Subsection 1.1.2: I Don’t Have Time
This belief is misguided; the real issue often lies in poor time management. If you can’t carve out 30 minutes to an hour daily for your freelance business, it’s time to rethink your daily planning.
Take a look at my Google Calendar:
Each segment of my day is planned, even my free time. This structure allows me to allocate specific time slots for tasks and prioritize effectively. Every Sunday evening, I organize my week to avoid distractions from emails or notifications.
Yes, changes happen, and unforeseen tasks may arise. However, I can quickly adjust by consulting my calendar. Try this method for a month and see how much it transforms your routine! Set aside an hour each weekday for your freelance business.
Remember: Consistent effort yields remarkable results!
Section 1.2: Overcoming the Fear of Failure
As Henry Ford wisely stated, “One who fears failure limits his activities.” The truth is, if you never take action, you won’t fail—but you also won’t succeed.
To improve your ability to cope with failure, you must: 1. Accept that failure is part of the journey. 2. Embrace opportunities to fail.
The fear often stems from worrying about negative reactions to your work. However, this feedback is essential for growth. Accept that you will receive critiques, and not all will be positive. Use it constructively!
When I first started voice-over work, my attempts were far from professional. With a cheap microphone and no soundproofing, the quality was poor, leading to much critical feedback. Yet, I used that criticism to refine my skills, and now I freelance full-time!
Subsection 1.2.1: Embrace Failure as a Learning Tool
I encourage you to actively seek failure at the outset—yes, you read that correctly! Setting out to fail can be a valuable learning experience.
Take all feedback graciously and professionally, even if it feels unjust or harsh. There’s usually a valuable lesson hidden within.
