When the Student Becomes the Teacher: Scout and Her Companions

Chapter 1: Introduction to Scout
In 2020, I welcomed Scout into my home, but her arrival was not without challenges. Due to persistent upper respiratory issues, she had to remain in quarantine for nearly two months. Understandably, she grew restless during this period, longing for interaction and freedom.
Meanwhile, my other two cats became increasingly curious about this new addition. They would sneak their paws under the door, eager to engage with Scout, but that was the extent of their initial interaction.
Once Scout was allowed to explore the house, the process of introducing her to the other cats was slow and careful. I prioritized the comfort of all involved, ensuring each cat had their own space. However, the transition was far from smooth, leading to hissing, swatting, and hurt feelings among my furry companions.
Section 1.1: The First Year
The first year was particularly challenging. Hermione, the more sociable of my cats, was the first to soften toward Scout. She would observe Scout from afar, both to check on her well-being and because she was still figuring out how to relate to this new companion.
Scout's blindness added another layer of complexity. She didn't respond to the usual visual signals that cats rely on, causing confusion during their early interactions. To complicate matters, Scout would occasionally leap at them in attempts to play, which left everyone bewildered.
As a result, my other cats kept their distance, leaving Scout feeling isolated and disheartened. It was heartbreaking to see her sad expressions, often bringing me to tears.
Subsection 1.1.1: Hermione's Guidance
Hermione took on a guiding role, gently swatting Scout when she misstepped. How many surprise ambushes could one cat endure? Over time, Scout learned the social structure of the group, realizing that Hermione was the leader.
Eventually, something clicked. Hermione began to include Scout in evening play sessions and morning games, resulting in pure joy for Scout. The first time Scout participated in these activities, her happiness was unmistakable.
As Hermione adapted her behavior towards Scout, Harper followed suit. Scout became the younger sister figure that both older cats felt compelled to protect, albeit with moments of exasperation. Yet, they all grew closer.
Chapter 2: The Shift in Dynamics
At first, I believed that the bond between Hermione and Scout was unbalanced, with Scout adoring Hermione while the latter merely tolerated her presence. I thought Hermione was solely keeping an eye on Scout to prevent her from getting into trouble, alerting me when Scout found herself in precarious situations.
Recently, however, I've observed Hermione picking up on some of Scout's behaviors. In two separate instances, I noticed Hermione trying to imitate Scout's well-known tactics.
The first occurred one afternoon while I was making lunch. I felt the gaze of at least two cats, and then one of them stood on her hind legs and nudged my hip. Expecting it to be Scout asking for food, I was surprised to find it was Hermione, eagerly requesting a taste of turkey.
Over time, Hermione had observed Scout successfully use this strategy and decided to give it a shot. And it worked!
Section 2.1: Learning New Tricks
Another instance happened on a lazy Sunday morning. When I tried to sleep in, Hermione crept closer to my face and meowed. When that didn’t rouse me, she hopped onto the windowsill and batted at the blinds, making noise until I stirred.
This reminded me of how Scout often paws at the bathroom door to wake me up. Regardless of the method, the outcome was the same: I got out of bed to feed them.
It seems the saying "you can't teach an old cat new tricks" doesn't hold true. In the world of cats, anything is possible.
