An Unexpected Encounter: How I Found Miss Eleanor by the Sewer

Chapter 1: A Familiar Place
As I drove towards the apartment complex, Siri's unclear directions did little to ease my mind. However, I felt a wave of recognition wash over me when I spotted the place. I parked my car and chuckled to myself as I stacked grocery bags in my arms. I missed my dear friend Miss Eleanor, who resided in this community, though I knew I wouldn’t see her on this delivery since her unit was located on the other side.
After dashing down a dimly lit corridor, I placed the bags outside the apartment door. I snapped a photo of the items for my delivery records, making sure to keep the entrance unobstructed. Efficient delivery is crucial in my job, and the last thing I wanted was to delay a customer. However, my phone was acting up, spinning endlessly while I anxiously awaited confirmation that my photo had been uploaded.
After several frustrating minutes, my nerves frayed as I realized I might not get paid for this delivery unless I could get the timestamped photo through. I decided to take a brief walk around the back of the building, hoping to improve my signal. I needed to finish this last delivery so I could finally head home.
"Please, just work!" I whispered, wiping my tears in frustration. Finally, the photo sent, and I let out a sigh of relief. “Yes!” I exclaimed, racing back to my car.
Once I was buckled in, I drove cautiously toward the exit, mindful of the speed limits. Having worked as a chiropractic assistant, I had witnessed too many accidents and knew how dangerous reckless driving could be.
Just as I was passing the rental community's pool, I noticed something alarming. An elderly woman lay motionless next to the sewer. Panic surged through me as I rushed over, my heart racing.
"Ma'am? Are you alright?" I called out, praying she was still alive. "Do you need assistance?"
To my surprise, the woman stood up with a broad grin. It was Miss Eleanor.
"Miss Eleanor! What are you doing here?" I asked, unsure if she would recognize me. While her memory often failed her, she seemed to recall that I was someone she liked.
"Hi! It's me, Missy. I'm Phil's friend," I explained, referencing her son. It was a strange relationship; I was her caregiver, yet she believed we were friends. I had learned to adapt to the narratives families preferred.
"I'm so glad we bumped into each other!" I said, attempting to ignore her recent misadventure with the sewer. "Let me call Phil and let him know you’re here."
Earlier that week, I had organized my phone, and fortunately, I hadn’t deleted Phil’s number. Even though Miss Eleanor was no longer my client due to insurance issues, I kept her family’s contact information for future needs.
After a few unsuccessful attempts, I sent Phil a text explaining the situation and that I was going to bring Miss Eleanor back inside. "Come on, Miss Eleanor, let's get you back in. It's too hot out here," I urged gently.
"But I feel fine!" she laughed.
"But there’s a storm coming. It’s not safe out here," I insisted, gesturing towards the ominous clouds.
Coughing lightly, I mentioned that my allergies were acting up, which seemed to do the trick. Miss Eleanor, always eager to help, invited me in for a glass of water.
"I'm just going to give Phil a quick call," I said, pulling out my phone again. He didn’t answer, so I sent another text updating him on our situation while we headed toward her apartment.
Reaching her back door, I felt a wave of relief wash over me. She was safe, and I wouldn’t have to worry about her next to the sewer anymore.
But my sense of ease was fleeting. Miss Eleanor, forgetting about my allergies, insisted on showing me her flower garden instead.
We strolled around the property, and I complimented her on her gardening skills, fully aware that she hadn’t planted a single flower. It was easier to go along with her perception than to correct her.
"I have something funny to show you," she said conspiratorially, leading me to her neighbor's patio. "Look at their flowers! They change them every time I do! Isn’t that strange? These neighbors can be so competitive!"
I laughed with her, not mentioning that the same plants were there because of the maintenance crew. Miss Eleanor’s perspective was charming, and I understood why she thought her neighbors were peculiar.
As thunder rumbled in the distance, I knew it was time to guide Miss Eleanor inside. "Did you hear that? We should go in," I said, as the first drops of rain began to fall.
After finally convincing her to head indoors, I locked the patio door behind us. We settled on the couch, laughing and chatting until Phil called me back.
"I’m so relieved you found her," he said. "Please keep her inside. The alarm must have failed; I’ll check it after work."
Phil's alarm system usually alerted him when Miss Eleanor tried to go outside. If I hadn’t found her, she could have wandered far.
I pondered the strange series of events that had unfolded. I wasn’t even scheduled to work that day; I had picked up an extra shift. I had an appointment with my doctor that afternoon, but I felt an overwhelming urge to cancel it. It made no sense, but I followed my instinct and called it off, feeling a wave of relief afterward.
Restless and wanting to get out, I opened my delivery app and saw I was needed in the area. This led me to Miss Eleanor’s neighborhood.
What if I hadn’t canceled my appointment? What if I hadn’t picked up this extra shift? I contemplated these questions as I sipped water on Miss Eleanor’s sofa.
"I'm so glad you visited me," she said, smiling warmly.
"Me too. I didn’t plan on being here today, but it seems life had other plans," I replied.
"God knows what we need," she said, her faith shining through.
"He certainly does," I affirmed, placing my empty glass in the sink. "Your God protects you, without a doubt."
"Indeed!" she agreed, completely forgetting the previous commotion.
Before I left, Miss Eleanor suggested, "Next time, let’s have ice cream! That would be wonderful!"
"Absolutely," I replied, knowing deep down that this might be our last meeting. "I’ll look forward to it."
