The Webb Space Telescope has provided an exceptional glimpse of a star on the brink of its demise. This rare image showcases a massive and brilliant star just before it detonates as a supernova, resembling a delicate snowflake in appearance.

Located approximately 15,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius, this unique star is classified as a Wolf-Rayet star. These stellar giants are not only incredibly luminous but also possess intense heat, with surface temperatures soaring to around 50,000 degrees Celsius. Although first identified in the late 1800s, astronomers have documented only a few hundred of these stars within our Galaxy.

Wolf-Rayet stars signify a critical phase in the life cycle of massive stars. If a star has sufficient mass, it culminates its life in a spectacular supernova explosion. Prior to this cataclysm, the star often experiences instability and expansion, ultimately shedding its outer layers into the cosmos.

The Wolf-Rayet star captured by the Webb Telescope is designated WR 124, boasting a mass equivalent to 30 suns. Currently, it is in a phase described as "skimming," with a powerful stellar wind—a vigorous outflow of particles—streaming from its outer atmosphere.

This stellar wind results in the ejection of matter into space, leading to a significant loss of mass for the star. Estimates suggest that WR 124 has already shed an amount of material equivalent to ten solar masses.

As the matter drifts farther from the star, it cools down. Surrounding WR 124 is the nebula M1–67, vividly depicted in the infrared image. This photograph reveals clusters of dust clouds enveloping the star, with distant suns illuminating the scene.

The Webb Telescope has become renowned for its remarkable detail in astronomical photography. The current image is no exception, where the central star resembles a snowflake amidst a nebula awash with shades of pink, purple, and yellow, with clouds of matter appearing in clustered bands.

Thanks to its advanced instruments, Webb facilitates an intimate exploration of stellar environments, providing valuable insights for astronomers. The immense dust and gas clouds, remnants of deceased stars, are also potential birthplaces for new stars and planets, forming nebulae that can locally condense and instigate star formation.

Interestingly, a supernova explosion near a gas cloud is believed to have contributed to the formation of our solar system. Paul Mudrin, in his book "Universe: A Biography," notes, "The supernova exploded close to the gas cloud, at a distance of 10 to 20 light years, causing its boundaries to be compressed. It was this event that led to the formation of the Sun." This information is supported by traces found in the Allende meteorite, which fell in Texas in 1969.

The image captured by Webb marks a pivotal moment in a star's transformation, enabling a more precise investigation into the creation and distribution of cosmic dust. Current theories struggle to adequately explain the origins of the excess cosmic dust present in the Universe, which exceeds predictions based on established dust formation mechanisms.

This surplus remains a mystery, and further detailed observations, now possible with the Webb Telescope, may hold the key to unraveling it.
