Transforming My Reading Journey: The Internet's Impact

Chapter 1: Rediscovering My Passion for Reading
As a child, reading was one of my favorite activities. My father encouraged our explorations in the library, allowing us the freedom to choose our own books. By the age of 12, I was engrossed in John Grisham's novels, and by 13, I found myself captivated by Stephen King's works. I still cherish my well-worn copy of "The Different Seasons."
However, my college years were challenging for my reading habits. Balancing full-time studies and a 40-hour workweek left little time for books. After marrying young and taking on stepchildren, my reading became sporadic, limited to a handful of favorite authors.
This all transformed in 2017!
Modern Mrs. Darcy was a game changer for my reading journey! The Podcast
In 2016, I transitioned to a new job with a lengthy 20 to 25-minute commute each way. In contrast, my previous position required only a three-minute drive. Those extra minutes felt interminable!
As the new year began, I stumbled upon the Modern Mrs. Darcy website. Created by Anne Bogel, it features a podcast called "What Should I Read Next." In each episode, Anne interviews a guest who shares three beloved books, one they dislike, and their current read. Based on this, Anne offers three recommendations tailored to their tastes.
This podcast became a treasure trove of literary inspiration. When I found guests with similar preferences, I eagerly added Anne's recommendations to my to-be-read (TBR) list.
Although I no longer tune in regularly, I highly recommend starting from episode one, as the earlier episodes are shorter and feature fewer ads. After all these years, the podcast has expanded to include various episode types, but my primary interest remains the book suggestions.
Section 1.1: The Bookstagram Experience
Another remarkable aspect of Anne's influence was introducing me to Bookstagram. I have little interest in Facebook, and Twitter is practically nonexistent for me. However, Instagram quickly became my favorite platform.
Upon discovering Bookstagram, I dove deep into the community. I set up an account (@dana_reads_travels) dedicated to book reviews and recommendations. The warmth of this community has led to genuine friendships. When my original account was hacked, fellow book lovers reached out to ensure I was okay. The camaraderie among book enthusiasts is truly special.
What Bookstagram has provided me most is a wealth of book recommendations. Unlike brief snippets found in magazines, users take the time to write thoughtful reviews, passionately sharing their favorites.
Previously, I primarily enjoyed mystery novels and women's fiction. Thanks to Bookstagram, I now embrace fantasy as one of my top genres, while thrillers account for a significant portion of my reading. Without this platform, I would likely have remained confined to just two genres.
Subsection 1.1.1: Discovering NetGalley
NetGalley is an online platform where readers can request advanced digital copies of books. Building a presence on this site takes time; newcomers shouldn't expect to access the latest releases from popular authors immediately.
Yet, NetGalley features a "Read Now" section, allowing users to download books and improve their feedback ratios, which are crucial for developing relationships with publishers.
While NetGalley has its advantages—such as providing early access to books I adore—it can also be overwhelming. I often find myself juggling multiple books that need reviewing. This experience taught me that not every book deserves a request and that I should prioritize reading what genuinely interests me over what I feel obligated to explore. Since creating my account, I’ve started requesting fewer titles, realizing that overhyped books don’t always live up to expectations.
Chapter 2: Embracing My Evolving Reading Life
The first video, "How Is Tech Changing the Way We Read?", explores how technological advancements are reshaping our reading habits, enhancing our access to literature and creating new communities.
The second video, "BEFORE AND AFTER THE INTERNET - How has the internet changed our lives," delves into the broader implications of the internet on our daily routines, including our approaches to reading and information consumption.
Conclusion: A New Chapter in My Reading Life
The three elements discussed have significantly refined my reading experience. I’ve gained insights into my preferences versus societal expectations. I no longer hesitate to abandon books that don’t resonate with me. My reading has flourished, allowing me to enjoy over 100 books a year for the past seven years, and I couldn't be happier!
