Transform Your Life: 52 Positivity Rituals for a Fulfilling Year

Chapter 1: Engaging in Self-Reflection
Let’s kick off this week with some genuine self-reflection. Picture a scenario where you encounter your younger self. With a sincere look on their face, they ask you, “What kind of person have I turned into?” How would you respond with absolute honesty? Dedicate ten minutes to ponder this question deeply.
If I were to speak to my 14-year-old self, I would express the following:
You’ve done well overall. Your university experience and travels (yes, you’ll explore the world) will transform you. You’re going to grow stronger! You’ve always had resilience, but now you’ll showcase it, and while you may sometimes come off too strong, stay true to your principles. Work on being less arrogant and more open-minded. Understand that not everyone shares your views! Life has its lessons, and your twenties will be challenging, filled with uncertainties and some heartache, but you’ll get through it. Remember, others face tougher battles than you do, so practice gratitude. There will be regrets and mistakes, but as Adele puts it, “They are memories made,” and I’d add, “and lessons learned.” So, don’t change a thing; every experience has shaped who you are today. Now at 32, you’re either happy or at least content, so embrace what lies ahead—these will be your best years. Cherish the journey, for it will mold you like a diamond. And by the way, at 23, you will meet lifelong friends who will remain by your side, even across great distances. Make sure to tell them you love them!
Have you ever come across the self-reflection theory?
This concept, established in 1967 by social psychologist Daryl Bem, suggests that individuals become aware of their own attitudes through observing their behaviors.
This applies both to our attitudes and those of others. For instance, if you observe someone passionately defending their beliefs, it’s likely you’ll perceive them as principled and courageous. Similarly, by reflecting on our behaviors, we can gain insights about our character. If I display kindness and courage, it’s probable that my overall attitude aligns with my actions, leading me to feel more virtuous and brave. This self-perception forms the basis of who we are.
An illustrative example from thedecisionlab.com involves a carpenter named Dave, who typically works 50 hours a week. Dave hasn’t contemplated his feelings about standard work hours or labor ethics until one evening at a bar, where a friend brings up the idea of a 35-hour work week in France and its associated productivity improvements. Dave, unfamiliar with such concepts, assumes that 40 hours isn’t excessive compared to his own schedule.
Through the lens of self-reflection theory, it's clear that behavior can influence attitude over time.
Returning to our discussions from weeks 11 and 12, we delved into perfectionism and its effects. Perfectionism is also an attitude, and transformation begins with modifying our behaviors.
Week 14: A New Opportunity for Reflection
Now, it’s time to engage in self-assessment once more. Contemplate your habitual actions, both towards others and yourself. What insights can you derive about your personality?

PRACTICE
Identify one aspiration you’ve long wished to pursue but hesitated due to fear of failure—now is the time to act! Enroll in that acting class so the world can witness your talent, ask out that person who occupies your thoughts, or launch that family blog you’ve envisioned.
IMPORTANT: As you embark on this journey, maintain an optimistic mindset, even if it requires some initial pretense. Consistently push yourself beyond your comfort zone, and remember, you’re not alone. Seek feedback from friends and family regarding their perceptions of you. Stay attuned to your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors while challenging yourself.
“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” — Leo Tolstoy
Don’t forget to practice gratitude. You might choose to do this weekly, but I recommend a daily routine. Spend just ten minutes before sleep reflecting on what you’re grateful for; I assure you, your rest will improve significantly.
Join me next week for Week 15!
