# The Intriguing Relationship Between Perception and Facts

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Perception

It’s quite easy to conjure up thoughts at a moment's notice. Perhaps we might say this cube appears round, or the sky is blue, or even suggest it’s purple. The facts we perceive today are often viewed as unchanged since a millennium ago. However, the human ego is delicate, and what we consider factual may not be as absolute as we assume. So, what exactly constitutes a fact? According to Google, a fact is “a thing that is known or proven to be true.” But is this definition itself a fact?

Facts emerge from our observations rather than our thoughts. For something to be classified as a fact, it must either be universally acknowledged or directly substantiated. This is the core understanding of a fact. We cannot simply fabricate a fact out of nowhere; it must be examined and recognized as a truth. Yet, truths do not always stem from perceptions, and perceptions do not inherently equate to facts. With this fragility in mind, how can we discern what is genuinely factual?

Imagine I’m holding an egg that I claim is purple. A nearby person insists that it’s actually whitish-brown. In my eyes, however, this egg is undeniably purple—perhaps the most vibrant shade of purple I've ever encountered! Another individual approaches and inspects the egg for a while, concluding that it’s red—well, at least for them. Now we have this egg identified as purple, red, and whitish-brown. Surely, it cannot possess all these colors simultaneously, can it?

Then, a traveler from a different village joins the scene, asserting that they also perceive the egg as red. Now, two people confirm the egg’s redness! This leads to a heated debate about the true color of the egg. Two individuals are convinced it must be red, while the other two disagree. Should the egg be categorized as purple, red, or whitish-brown?

After two hours of intense discourse, the argument shows no signs of resolution. Despite two people asserting the egg's redness, the disagreement remains. Then, a blind man, intrigued by the commotion, approaches the group. He feels his way to them and inquires about the egg. The individual holding the “purple” egg reluctantly hands it over. The blind man then slams the egg against the ground with force, causing it to shatter. In that moment, the group reaches a consensus: the egg's color no longer matters, but its contents have unified their views.

This scenario illustrates that facts hold equal importance to perception. We must align our understanding of facts with a shared consensus. However, perception complicates the nature of facts. Humans inherently tend to make estimations, leading to varied beliefs about what constitutes a fact. If a majority subscribes to a notion, it is often accepted as a fact, regardless of its truth.

The essence of this narrative lies in the interplay between perception and facts. Our interpretations of facts can lead to discord. Often, we might be uncertain if an egg is genuinely brown or blue. Nevertheless, the value lies in discerning what can be substantiated and what remains unverified.

Section 1.1: The Nature of Reality

The relationship between perception and reality is complex and multifaceted. Our understanding of the world is often shaped by what we perceive, leading to varied interpretations of the same fact. This can create a disconnect between individual perceptions and a collective understanding of reality.

Section 1.2: The Role of Consensus

The process of reaching consensus is essential in defining facts. When a majority agrees on a perception, it often becomes accepted as a fact, even if it isn’t objectively true. This raises questions about the validity of our beliefs and the nature of truth itself.
