Earnings on Medium are largely determined by reading time. Initially, I thought the answer was to make my articles as lengthy as possible, drawing out discussions on topics like Brexit or climate change.

However, this approach seemed far too labor-intensive. The real solution was right in front of me: if earnings depend on reading time, why not create content so incredibly dull that it lulls your readers to sleep? The longer they stay engaged with your piece—even if it’s in a sleepy haze—the better. Imagine a taxi driver taking tourists on a convoluted route just to run up the fare; your goal is to keep your readers lingering on your article's page.
