You Are Just One Nap Away from Unleashing Creative Breakthroughs

Rediscovering Childlike Wonder

Why are we no longer embracing silly questions? In our rush to become experts, we often overlook the value of a childlike curiosity. Everyone seems to be marketing visions of an ideal future, yet I prefer to cherish the present and its mysteries.

Let's pause for a moment. Today marks the youngest you'll ever be.

Remember the last time you played outside with friends? Neither do I! So many moments of joy pass by unnoticed as we become preoccupied with future concerns.

Our lives are filled with certainty, schedules, and routines, causing time to slip away and leaving little room for spontaneity. Instead of "downtime," let’s reclaim "playtime."

Imagine setting aside a daily slot for play—this could involve reconnecting with an old friend, visiting a local museum, or trying out a musical instrument.

David Epstein, in his book Range, highlights an intriguing fact:

“Compared to other scientists, Nobel laureates are at least 22 times more likely to engage as amateur performers—be it acting, dancing, or magic.”

Engaging in activities outside our usual realm can significantly impact our creativity. Innovators tackle problems from unique angles, influenced by diverse experiences. For example, Richard Feynman dabbled in lock-picking and played the bongo, while Albert Einstein enjoyed the violin.

This reminds me of a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“A sturdy lad from New Hampshire or Vermont tries various professions—farming, teaching, or even editing a newspaper—falling on his feet like a cat each time. Such a person is worth a hundred of these city dolls.”

The Power of a Nap

One day, after a restless night, I found myself unable to write. Instead, I ended up browsing Reddit for the best men's briefs (Nylon from ExOfficio, in case you're curious).

Feeling stuck, I decided to take a spontaneous nap, an instinct that led to an unexpectedly inspiring afternoon.

Upon waking, I recalled a conversation with a prominent surgeon at a friend's wedding. I asked him, "What does success feel like?"

He replied, humorously, "I only feel successful when I’m reading." He went on to share that true success for him was not about achievements but about continual growth. With a passion for reading, I inquired about his book suggestion.

Without hesitation, he recommended 40 Rules of Love by Elif Shafak. Although I typically lean towards non-fiction, I downloaded the audiobook and embarked on a bike ride to listen.

Three and a half hours later, I was utterly captivated. Not only was it an engaging story, but the mystical and spiritual elements resonated deeply within me, sparking an evening filled with creativity and self-reflection.

The rules that stood out reignited my spirit after two years of stagnation.

Embracing Love

This impulsive nap and the serendipitous encounter with the novel led me to express my feelings to my date. To my delight, she felt the same way!

I realized that my analytical side had been holding me back from opening my heart, as if I needed to justify my feelings before fully embracing love.

I had never been one to nap, but breaking that habit removed a significant barrier between myself and my better self. Perhaps it could do the same for you.

Trust Your Instincts

I hope my story inspires you to step away from your rigid routines. Write something new. Act spontaneously without overanalyzing. You may be just one instinctive move away from discovering your next best self.

And if you're feeling uninspired, consider taking a nap and see where it leads you.
