How to Craft an eBook in Just 24 Hours: A Complete Guide

Written on

Chapter 1: The Journey Begins

In December 2021, I found myself in an unexpected situation. Indonesia mandated a 10-day quarantine for all incoming travelers. I had just flown from Venice, Italy, to Jakarta—what a twist of fate!

Stuck in a hotel room for 10 days was, quite frankly, dull. My initial binge-watching of "Downton Abbey" only entertained me for three days. This led me to a self-imposed challenge: to write a new eBook within 24 hours. During this time, I managed to complete a guide on creating lead magnets, draft a couple of launch emails, and design the sales page.

Here’s how I structured my approach.

Why Write an eBook in 24 Hours?

Embarking on this challenge offers numerous advantages:

  1. It serves as a productivity benchmark.
  2. It can enhance engagement levels.
  3. You end up with a fully developed product or lead magnet.

That said, the experience can be more enjoyable without the burden of jet lag. Spending ten days in a room with minimal sunlight left me feeling quite sluggish. Despite my efforts, I struggled to sleep more than three hours at a time. Here’s a picture of me post-quarantine—definitely not the happiest version of myself.

Identify a Problem to Solve

The first step in creating any product is pinpointing a problem. Compile a list of frustrations you encounter, aiming for at least ten potential issues. From this list, eliminate those you can't address. Focus on problems that can be resolved through an eBook of 1,000 to 10,000 words. As a non-native speaker, I aimed for a maximum of 5,000 words to stay safe.

You’ll likely identify two to five viable options. Choose the one you are most excited to write about.

Set Clear Outcomes

While your main goal is to resolve the chosen issue, having a crystal-clear understanding of this objective will help you outline your eBook effectively. You can increase its appeal by making the result more specific.

For instance, instead of a vague promise like "You’ll have many article ideas," you could say, "Generate at least 10 new article ideas daily." This measurable goal sets a clear standard for success and boosts reader trust.

Outline the Benefits

Draft a bullet-point list of every sub-topic you intend to cover in your eBook. For each item, clarify how it will help the reader achieve the promised outcome. By the end of this process, you will have both an outline and a list of benefits to feature on your landing page.

Consider what unique aspects distinguish your eBook from others. While you don’t need to stress about its uniqueness during a 24-hour writing sprint, a distinguishing feature will enhance its attractiveness.

The Right Mindset for Writing

Before diving in, accept that this might not be your magnum opus. Your aim is to address the problem and provide essential information for readers. However, the eBook may lack some polish. It's okay if your examples or stories aren't perfect. Think of this effort as a beta version (1.0) that you can refine later, allowing you to promote a polished version 2.0 down the line.

Time to Write

I recommend starting with the landing page copy. This will give you complete clarity on what you are promising your readers. Afterward, focus on the eBook itself. The challenge lies not in the word count but in maintaining focus.

During my writing sprint, I was confined to my hotel room, unable to take breaks or walk outside—my only distraction being snippets of "Downton Abbey." Hopefully, your circumstances will be more accommodating.

Try to find your rhythm and resist the urge to take prolonged breaks; wait until you’re halfway through before allowing yourself a break.

Tools for Publishing Your eBook

As you prepare to publish, remember that this eBook is a beta version. Prioritize speed over perfection and aim to release it as soon as possible. Here’s a brief list of essential tools:

  • Google Docs: Ideal for creating your eBook with features like images, page numbers, footnotes, and a table of contents. Keep it simple and avoid spending too much time on graphics.
  • Gumroad: Excellent for selling and delivering your eBook. It's quick to set up, and many customers are already familiar with its interface. You can use Gumroad for your sales page, although it may not be the best option for that purpose. Consider…
  • Carrd: If web design isn't your strength, stick with Gumroad. However, if you have extra time and confidence in your design skills, Carrd can help you create a more effective landing page.

Engage Your Audience

Sharing the process of writing an eBook in a single day can be an enjoyable experience for your readers. Not only will they appreciate the journey, but it will also serve as an effective promotional tool for your eBook.

In my case, I utilized a Telegram channel aimed at my Italian audience, but any social media platform will do. This approach can help you attract new followers.

If the task feels overwhelming, consider spreading it out over a weekend. While I managed my next eBook in a single weekend, the advantages and disadvantages are as follows:

Pros:

  • It’s less taxing on your mental energy.
  • You have additional time to contemplate the details.

Cons:

  • There’s a higher likelihood of procrastination.
  • Engaging your audience during the challenge may be more difficult.

Regardless of the method you choose, both will yield a positive outcome. Your new eBook can serve as a product or lead magnet, all while being a valuable exercise in productivity.
