Finding a New Mechanic: Coping with Change and Trust Issues

Written on

Chapter 1: A Heartfelt Goodbye

From a young age, I understood the importance of establishing a reliable relationship with a mechanic.

I recently brought my worn 2003 Buick in for an oil change and routine inspection. And now, he’s leaving me.

He was supposed to remain in business for the long haul, but I’m left feeling heartbroken. He sold his shop to a local family that has been acquiring other businesses, and I have concerns about their practices. Much like my choice to avoid Amazon due to their issues, I find myself needing my trusted mechanic more than ever.

At just 62 years old, why does he feel the need to retire? It feels almost personal, and I can't shake the sadness.

After 25 years of partnership, this feels like abandonment. I had two previous mechanics before him, but I was the one to move on—not because I was dissatisfied, just life circumstances.

It's akin to leaving a spouse; you just pack up and say "Adios, amor mío."

A vintage Volkswagen Beetle, a symbol of simpler times.

My first vehicle was a used Volkswagen Beetle.

Beetles are low-maintenance—just regular oil changes. If you’ve owned one, you know that their quirky engines require a bit of charm, like feeding hamsters. When repairs were needed, it was off to the dealer since we don’t use metric tools in the States.

They had their quirks:

  • Door handles would detach,
  • Windows would refuse to cooperate,
  • Things rattled and knobs would vanish.

Yet, they would start even in frigid temperatures and brave snowy conditions without a hitch. No heating system, but I managed just fine.

A classic Ford Pinto, a reminder of automotive history.

My second car was a brand-new Ford Pinto.

Those old enough will chuckle at the thought. I didn’t find it amusing.

While it started, it often chose when to stop, sometimes in the most inconvenient places. After a trip to the dealership for repairs, my husband—an engineer—lost it. He sent letters to various agencies, leading to a massive recall.

In June 1978, Ford initiated the largest recall in automotive history, addressing safety concerns before they escalated.

A Chevrolet Chevette, a nostalgic piece of automotive history.

Then came my third car, a Chevette, which I affectionately named Inky.

Inky was full of energy and always started without fail. However, just like my previous vehicles, he had a tendency to stop unexpectedly.

I sought help from the Chevrolet dealer, who claimed there was nothing wrong. Frustrated, I consulted my attorney, who advised me to take matters into my own hands.

With my children in tow and armed with snacks, I planted myself at the dealership, ready to stand my ground. Eventually, my customer's regular John stepped in and replaced Inky's engine without me mentioning any of the dealings.

Two dealerships later, I decided to buy used cars and support small mechanics.

One day, after an oil change, my car broke down just down the street. After calling the mechanic, I reached out to another who came quickly, discovering that the first mechanic had intentionally created issues for extra repair work.

I took him to Small Claims Court and won, securing my new mechanic.

A good mechanic is someone who is:

  • Trustworthy,
  • Competent,
  • Transparent about repairs,
  • Provides options,
  • Offers assistance even during harsh weather,
  • Helps during family emergencies,
  • Loans out vehicles when necessary.

Finding a new mechanic after relocating for work involved asking around extensively.

After 25 years, I found my current mechanic, just three blocks from home. I could drop off my car and walk back, and he would drive me home if the weather was bad.

A few years back, during the Christmas season, I came in for repairs totaling $200. To my surprise, he told me there was no charge.

"We’ve had a great year, and you’re our favorite customer," he said with a smile. "Get out of here and enjoy your holiday."

But now, he’s leaving me.

I confronted him about his retirement plans, and we had a lengthy conversation. He lost his partner at a young age, prompting him to consider his own future. He’ll be transitioning customers to the new owners and plans to retire by July.

The sadness I feel is overwhelming. It’s not just about finding someone new; there’s a mechanic just a mile away who seems great.

Could it be I have a sort of crush on my mechanic? It certainly feels that way.

No, it’s more about the comfort of having a dependable professional over so many years. Even with my old 2003 vehicle, I’ve had no significant issues.

We reminisced about our time together. He even invited me to his church, although I don’t attend.

Why did he extend that invitation to me?
