# Embracing Technology: The Joy of Assistive Devices for Everyday Life

Chapter 1: The Fascination with Gadgets
I have always been enthusiastic about gadgets, reveling in the innovative creations that science has provided for humanity. My career as an ICU and OR nurse involved extensive interaction with sophisticated medical technology, often troubleshooting issues when they arose. Even in retirement, my passion for gadgets remains as vibrant as ever.
Next came my journey with assistive devices, starting with my first pair of glasses in fourth grade to correct my astigmatism and nearsightedness. The ability to see the blackboard and even my mother's freckles felt nothing short of miraculous! As my eyesight changed, I transitioned to contact lenses during my teenage years, which I still wear today. However, due to extensive screen time and natural aging, my home is now filled with +2.0 reading glasses, conveniently placed within arm’s reach wherever I might need them.
Section 1.1: The Power of Simple Tools
My next significant assistive device was a jar/can opener. After suffering from a severe case of bilateral tennis elbow that required surgery on both arms, I found it increasingly difficult to exert the necessary torque to open jars. The turning point came when I struggled to open a new jar of gelato—nothing stands between me and my ice cream! I quickly purchased a handy jar opener, which proved to be the best $12 I ever spent on Amazon, making it easy to pop the lid off.
The first video, "I've tested 5,000 gadgets - These are the 10 I actually use," showcases various useful tools that can make life easier, including devices similar to the jar opener I discovered.
Section 1.2: Enhancing Hearing and Connection
Last March, I decided to have my hearing tested after my daughter, whom I affectionately call "Mother To The Magical Creatures," expressed concern about my ability to hear my granddaughters clearly. Research suggests that untreated hearing loss can increase the risk of dementia later in life, which further motivated my decision. The results confirmed what we suspected—my hearing had significantly declined. I subsequently invested in hearing aids, and I absolutely love them! I encourage anyone hesitant about getting tested for hearing aids to consider it seriously.
Chapter 2: Maintaining Balance and Mobility
The second video, "I Bought New - 10 Useful Gadgets 2024 | Test," offers insights into the latest gadgets that help enhance daily living, including mobility aids.
As of now, walking and balance are not significant challenges for me, and I feel incredibly fortunate to acknowledge this. Over twenty-five years of practicing yoga has granted me stability paired with flexibility. Recently, I started using KT tape on my left knee after a swimming-related sprain. Thanks to yoga, my joints are generally quite limber, but at times they can feel overly loose. The tape provides essential support during activities like hiking or bowling.
In conclusion, I am immensely grateful to live in an era where gadgets and gizmos are readily accessible. They genuinely enhance our ability to lead happier and healthier lives.
Namaste.
