How to Build a Business with Timeless Principles and Generosity

Chapter 1: A Personal Journey in Business
Over the past six months, I've been actively sharing content on LinkedIn. My key takeaway? Many people struggle with crafting effective cold outreach messages.
It’s with genuine respect that I say this, but the number of generic, copy-and-paste outreach messages I receive daily is staggering. The unsolicited connection requests often scream "sales pitch" before you even consider accepting them. Sound familiar?
I’m not a sales guru, but I did embark on a side project in 2013, developing websites for local businesses in my area. Fast forward to now, that modest side project from my small apartment has evolved into two web design and digital marketing firms in New York. Recently, I sold one to a larger company.
And I achieved this without: - Employees - A physical office - Constantly churning out content - Spending a dime on ads
I don’t share this to show off, but to illustrate that you can create real value and make a living without needing extravagant resources. So, how did I manage this?
It all came down to a classic "hit the pavement" approach.
In essence, my success hinged on cold outreach. I dedicated my days off to visiting local businesses, distributing flyers, and engaging in conversations with everyone from neighbors to waitstaff. I even reached out via cold emails to people who could genuinely benefit from my services.
However, my cold emails weren’t typical. Here are two key principles I followed:
- Each message was crafted uniquely for the recipient, akin to writing a personal letter to a friend.
- I always included valuable insights or services in my outreach.
Before sending an email, I conducted thorough research on the individual and their business, preparing valuable offerings such as: - Optimized landing page designs to enhance conversions - SEO improvement suggestions - A lead magnet to help them collect email leads - Logo design concepts tailored to their brand
Essentially, I sought out potential pain points in their businesses and aimed to offer quick solutions—all at no charge.
While this approach didn’t guarantee that every contact would become a client, it certainly yielded positive outcomes. I built connections and earned a reputation as someone who truly provides value.
My simple advice? If you want someone’s business, invest genuine effort. Differentiate yourself from the competition. Lead with generosity and offer value before you even introduce yourself.
Otherwise, your outreach will likely be just another generic pitch lost in their inbox—who wants to engage with that?
