A Journey Through Challenges: A Tale of Survival and Secrets

Written on

Chapter 1: The Challenge Begins

This narrative continues from a previous installment. A unique expedition was planned for those trainees who excelled as both scouts and fighters. Participation was voluntary for each group, but it was compulsory for those who belonged to both categories.

The trainees would be divided into two squads, tasked with surviving in the wilderness for three days while locating and gathering leaves from ten distinct plants, a list of which would be provided at the challenge’s onset. Additionally, each group would have to fend off possible ambushes that could occur at any time, whether during the day or at night. The team that completed the challenge first would earn a special recognition, granting its members seniority and privileges over their peers.

Myla's team was made up of herself, Sebo, Kore, Zoel, and Jase. Sebo was quiet and kind, reminiscent of Niko, but taller in stature. Kore was an exceptional sprinter, but despised long-distance running. She was significantly larger than Myla, even though they were of similar ages. Being the only sprinter in the group, Kore had not trained much with the others.

Zoel often accompanied Sebo, yet they were polar opposites; Zoel held a high opinion of himself and was notably short. On the day they were late, Sebo could have arrived on time, but he chose to wait for Zoel. Jase was, by far, the kindest member of the group, though he was surprisingly slow on his feet.

Myla felt as if she were being punished by being placed with what she considered the least capable trainees. Being the smallest, she had hoped for stronger and faster runners or more skilled fighters on her team. Did her tardiness that one time result in this? Everyone who had been late found themselves on the same team.

On the first morning of the challenge, the teams were led out of the camp, each carrying a few belongings. They were instructed to present their team captains to receive their respective plant lists. Neither team had appointed a captain, and the trainees were unaware that this unexpected request was part of the challenge—a test of leadership.

"Come forward, Captains. Now," Niko commanded.

"Here, Niko," Sebo replied, stepping forward from Myla's team, and the group silently accepted his leadership. The opposing team seemed to be engaged in a dispute among themselves.

"Captains!" Niko shouted again.

A tall, muscular boy rushed forward and proclaimed, "Here!"

With lists and captains in hand, the challenge commenced.

Myla harbored additional anxiety regarding the challenge. She recognized that her secret hideout could significantly aid her team by providing ample drinking water, but she was reluctant to reveal this invaluable information. She resolved to keep it as a last resort.

As they hiked out to find a suitable camping spot, the teammates circulated the list and discussed where to locate some of the plants. Sebo suggested they mentally prepare for the ambush and brainstorm potential defensive strategies.

"But how can we prepare for an ambush? We’re just out in the wilderness," Zoel complained.

"That’s a benefit as well," Myla countered. "We can disperse easily."

"Why have we been given three full days to gather just ten plants? We could each find two in a few hours," Kore mused.

"True," Sebo acknowledged. "There must be more to this challenge. I suspect the ambush will occur after we’ve gathered most of the plants. We might need time to locate them again."

"Living outdoors could also be part of the challenge," Myla speculated, considering the chilly conditions. She recalled her own experiences surviving alone for an extended period, with memories from that time blending together.

She thought about the snake bite she suffered; sleeping on the ground was not appealing. Her conscience urged her to share her knowledge of the cave, but she resisted.

"Maybe some plants will be hard to find," Jase suggested.

The group exchanged glances before approaching Sebo, who was retrieving the list again. They gathered around him and reviewed each item. Most plants were common, but marjoram could prove challenging in the cold.

"Let’s start with marjoram," Sebo proposed. The group agreed.

"There’s likely some at the base of the hill behind the waterfall!" Jase exclaimed.

Myla’s heart sank. Jase was correct; it was the most probable location for their search. She wished she could recall whether she had spotted any there, but a more troubling thought crossed her mind—the other team would likely search there as well if it was on their list.

The team advanced toward the hill’s base, approaching the cave’s entrance. Myla’s heart raced; she hoped they were unaware of the cave’s existence.

Then she halted.

"Team."

They stopped and turned to her.

With a heavy heart, she realized she had to reveal her precious secret. "I believe we’ll be ambushed at the bottom of the hill."

"What? Why do you think that?" Zoel asked.

"Because, Zoel, there’s a cave down there where our attackers could hide undetected and access plenty of fresh water."

The team backed away slightly, strategizing their defense.

"What do you know about the cave, Myla? Share everything, even if you think it’s trivial," Sebo urged.

Still hesitant, Myla began to speak. "The entrance is small, and there’s a rock slab about my size with a few ledges around it."

The team looked at her expectantly. A burning sensation welled in her chest, threatening tears.

"You have to enter from the side," she indicated in the dirt. "It’s rocky, almost like awkward stairs."

She hesitated again.

"And then…"

She struggled to continue. Had she not already shared enough?

"Yes, what’s there?" Sebo encouraged.

Swallowing hard as emotion tightened her throat, she added, "There’s a large pool of water."

Her reconnaissance was impressive, leaving the team uncertain of how she had acquired it and why she was reluctant to share. It was evident the cave held significance for Myla, and they were careful not to press her further.

After a moment, Myla steeled herself and proceeded. "Many people can fit in there, but it would be cramped. More could fit, but they would be soaked, especially in this cold. Moreover, they would have to enter one at a time and wouldn’t be able to exit quickly."

"This is incredibly useful information, Myla. Thank you for sharing it," Sebo said respectfully.

Tears streamed down Myla’s face now, not in sobs but flowing quietly. The others looked away, unsure of what to do. Kore feigned interest in the list that Sebo held, and the others followed suit.

Jase offered Myla a grateful smile, closing his eyes and bowing his head in appreciation for what she had endured to share this critical information. He leaned over and whispered, "Your secret’s safe with us."
