A Decade Later: Rediscovering Fitness and Friendships

Chapter 1: The Return to Fitness

After a lengthy hiatus, I recently decided to renew my gym membership, having been away for ten years.

The gym I used to frequent underwent renovations in 2016, which extended well beyond the planned timeline, compounded by the COVID lockdowns that followed. Like many others, the pandemic affected me more profoundly than I had anticipated, primarily on a mental level that I wasn't fully aware of.

With my local gym out of commission, my commitment to fitness drove me to purchase an elliptical machine and a recumbent bike. I established a new workout routine in the second bedroom of my apartment.

However, after a shoulder injury caused by an unfortunate mishap involving a microwaved sweet potato and boiling water, my physical therapist recommended that I incorporate weight training into my aerobics regimen.

While my condo was already cramped with the elliptical and bike, I was hesitant to invest further in additional equipment. Fortunately, my old gym reopened after the lockdown, and they graciously accepted my Silver Sneakers card, allowing me to return without any monthly fees—one of the few advantages of aging.

The therapist provided me with a list of upper body and shoulder exercises while encouraging me to keep up with my aerobic workouts.

During my initial visits back to the gym, I took some time to assess the available machines and weights, which proved to be more than sufficient for my rehabilitation and ongoing health maintenance.

I had been a member of this well-appointed gym for nearly 15 years in the early 2000s, often working out with a group of friends who would then head out to breakfast at a local diner. We’d finish early enough for some of us to catch the train into Philadelphia for work. Unfortunately, I had lost touch with nearly all of them.

Ah, the gym buddies—sharing laughs and weights without any deeper connections, reminiscent of those phony western towns depicted in films. I found myself wondering if any of those familiar faces still frequented the gym, and I hoped to reconnect.

Section 1.1: A Familiar Stranger

On my third visit back, I re-familiarized myself with the machines and weights, but none of my old friends were in sight. Several faces seemed recognizable, but honestly, after a decade, I struggled to associate names with the now older appearances.

Interestingly, no one approached me either, aside from a few curious glances. Had I aged so much that I was just as unrecognizable to them as they were to me?

As I pondered this, a voice broke through my thoughts.

"Hey Brian!" a strong voice called out.

"Where have you been?" the man asked. He looked familiar, though older, with more wrinkles and less hair, making it difficult to pinpoint his identity. Despite my efforts, I couldn’t recall his name.

"Uh," was all I could manage, feeling somewhat embarrassed.

"You're still wearing that scruffy T-shirt! I wouldn’t have recognized you without it!" my old gym buddy teased.
