Unlocking the Secrets: 3 Essential Writing Tips You Need to Know

Written on

Chapter 1: The Essence of Writing

Every day, countless story ideas pass by unnoticed. The exceptional writers are those who can identify several of them. As Orson Scott Card aptly put it, "Most people don’t see any."

Inspiring Writing Journey

I have been engaged in online writing for more than a year now. What began as a leisurely pastime has transformed into a dedicated pursuit. During this time, I've authored over 180 articles on Medium, initiated a weekly newsletter, released a free e-book, and developed a complimentary goal checklist.

Throughout my journey, I’ve gained insights into writing that aren’t commonly shared or taught. Much of this knowledge may seem counterintuitive at first glance. With that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of three writing strategies that have greatly aided my focus and productivity. These tips are beneficial whether you're a full-time writer, part-time contributor, or just starting out.

Section 1.1: Tip #1 - Maintain a Continuous Idea List

You might be familiar with the concept of “writer’s block,” which occurs when you struggle to find motivation or feel your writing isn’t up to par. During such moments, maintaining a list of ideas can be incredibly helpful.

Use whatever method suits you best, whether it's a notes app on your phone, a Google Doc, or a traditional notebook. The aim is to keep the creativity flowing without worrying about quality. Once you start jotting down your thoughts, inspiration will often follow.

Section 1.2: Tip #2 - Establish a Personalized Writing Schedule

There’s no universally correct way to write. Some individuals thrive in the early morning, while others prefer late-night sessions. Some may write in brief bursts, while others can immerse themselves for hours at a time.

The crucial aspect is to discover a writing routine that aligns with your lifestyle. Personally, I find weekends to be the most conducive for writing, as I can do so without the distractions of work or meetings. Experimenting with different times and durations can help you find your ideal writing rhythm. Over time, this will develop into a beneficial habit.

Section 1.3: Tip #3 - Live Fully and Write About Your Experiences

For those who follow my work, you know that I advocate for embracing life to the fullest. The best ideas often stem from real-life experiences. Many of my initial articles revolved around my dating life, wellness, and valuable life lessons.

Sharing personal experiences is one of the most effective ways to enhance your writing. As Natalie Goldberg advised, “Write what disturbs you, what you fear, what you have not been willing to speak about.” This doesn’t mean you need to pen an autobiography, but expressing your journey and lessons learned can be profoundly impactful.

While recounting daily life may not seem exhilarating, it’s a powerful method for improving your writing. Reflecting on your experiences allows you to witness your growth as a writer over time.

Ask yourself regularly: Did I truly live while I was in the moment?
