# Writing for Whom? Understanding My Audience

Chapter 1: Understanding My Audience
When it comes to writing, the question of audience is often complex. While it's widely advised to identify your readership, there isn't always a clear-cut answer. You might hear that it's crucial to avoid trying to reach everyone, as this can lead to losing your core audience.
I certainly write with specific readers in mind, but my interests are vast. Admittedly, not every piece I craft is aimed at the same group. My repertoire includes fiction, nonfiction, and poetry across various genres such as literary fiction, science fiction, and contemporary romance. I once applied for a writing fellowship and received feedback indicating that my submitted excerpts felt like they had been penned by different authors.
In my essays, I delve into a multitude of topics including race and racism, psychology, social justice, personal growth, relationships, women's rights, romance, pop culture, and the dismantling of white supremacy. The range is extensive!
I don't fret about potentially alienating readers who may encounter something unexpected from me, such as a race-related article following a self-help piece. Authenticity is my guiding principle.
Here are two examples of my work aimed at different audiences. One is designed for a broad readership, while the other speaks directly to a Black audience.

Let’s Talk Black Folk and Respectability Politics
This piece addresses a specific audience and delves into the complexities of respectability politics.
So, who is my audience?
I write for the underdog, the achiever, the one who feels overwhelmed, the phoenix rising from adversity, the dreamers of all sizes, the realists, the lovers, the lost, and the found. I write for those who resist conformity, the adventurous spirits, the introverts, the thinkers, and the believers.
I also write for every Black woman who embodies multiple layers, as well as anyone who resonates with that experience.
Support My Work
If you appreciate my writing and would like to show your support, consider buying me a cup of coffee. This gesture will help fuel my creativity and allow me to produce quality articles, books, and short stories.
Sincerely,
Rosalyn
