# Transformative £120 Exercise That Impacted Lives Significantly

Understanding Limiting Beliefs
In the Northeast of England, I often conduct multiple sessions each year with university students, aiming to address their limiting beliefs. While some students actively participate, others remain disengaged. It's understandable; competing with the allure of the latest TikTok videos can be challenging. However, the most profound engagement I encountered stemmed from a surprisingly simple exercise.
Let’s dive into it.
Imagine purchasing a ticket for the Football Cup Final or a West End show in London. As you make your way to the venue, you suddenly realize that you’ve misplaced the £120 ticket. Fortunately, you have another £120 available in your bank account to purchase a replacement. It’s a manageable expense for you this week. Would you buy a new ticket?
Think carefully before proceeding.
Now, envision a slightly different scenario: you're heading to the Cup Final or the performance, but this time, you intended to buy the £120 ticket upon arrival. At the venue's box office, you find that you’ve lost the £120 cash you had set aside for the ticket. Again, you have another £120 in your bank account to cover a new ticket. It’s an easy choice, right? Would you still opt to buy a new ticket? Reflect on that before you continue reading.
In the first scenario, approximately 70% of the students indicated they would purchase a replacement ticket, driven by their desire to enjoy the show. In contrast, most students hesitated to buy a new ticket when they lost the cash. What about you?
Despite both situations resulting in a £120 loss, the decisions varied significantly. This brings us to the concept of “framing.” Our decisions are often influenced by our values and previous experiences.
The Power of Perspective
Changing the frame can lead to different decisions. Many of my students went on to successfully complete their master's degrees, pursuing careers they once deemed unattainable. Even when their well-intentioned parents expressed doubts about their potential for success, they simply smiled and persevered.
