  • "I haven’t spoken to my dad in days since our last argument."
  • "Honestly, I’m just looking forward to the weekend."

We often accept these sentiments as part of life, but who dictates that life should be this way? Life can offer so much more, and so can you.

I firmly believe that everyone possesses the potential to lead a more fulfilling life, yet we frequently lack the awareness and tools necessary to initiate change.

Here’s where the Wheel of Life comes in. This tool may be straightforward, but it requires a commitment to self-honesty. You must acknowledge your present state and identify where you wish to go. There will be uncertainty and challenges along the way, but I assure you that the destination is the life you've always dreamed of.

Chapter 2: The Origins and Structure of the Wheel

The concept of the Wheel of Life originates from Buddhism, where it served to impart lessons of enlightenment through an eight-fold path. Various adaptations exist, and the version we’re discussing today is rooted in life coaching.

This contemporary interpretation comprises ten segments, each representing different aspects of your life:

  • Physical Health
  • Mental Well-being
  • Family Relationships
  • Friendships
  • Romantic Relationships
  • Career & Business
  • Financial Health
  • Time Management & Habits
  • Leisure & Fun
  • Contribution to Society

I encourage you to explore these areas further. Feel free to download my version or create one that resonates with you. Some versions may omit family or friendships, while others may emphasize different aspects like spirituality or nutrition. The key is to find what works best for you.

Chapter 3: Engaging with the Wheel of Life

To utilize the Wheel, evaluate each area on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 represents dissatisfaction and 10 signifies complete fulfillment. Once you've assessed each section, connect the dots to visualize your current life situation.

Now, the fun part begins. Analyze each segment and identify the areas you wish to improve. Remember, balance doesn’t mean equal slices; it’s about determining what brings you fulfillment.

Once you’ve chosen an area to focus on, ask yourself some thought-provoking questions:

  • How does my current rating make me feel?
  • What would a score of [current number +2] look like?
  • How would achieving that score impact my emotions?
  • What steps can I take to reach that score?
  • Why is this goal significant to me?
  • What immediate actions can I take to progress toward that score?

For instance, if I rated my "Family - Relationship with Mom" a 6, I might reflect on how that rating affects me. Perhaps I feel distant because we don’t communicate often. An 8 might mean more frequent, meaningful conversations, which would enhance our connection.

This process empowers you to take charge of your life. We often underestimate our ability to effect change.

Chapter 4: Maintaining the Wheel of Life

How often should you revisit the Wheel of Life? That’s entirely up to you. If you’re just beginning, consider reviewing it monthly. Personally, I assess my Wheel every few months to set and pursue goals.

As for what each area signifies, it could fill an entire blog post. However, here’s a brief overview of the ten segments:

  1. Physical Health: Focuses on fitness and nutrition.
    • Questions: How do I feel daily? What’s my current fitness routine? How healthy is my diet?
  2. Mental Well-being: Concerns mental energy and sleep.
    • Questions: What’s my stress level? Can I focus well? How well do I sleep?
  3. Family Relationships: Centers on your familial connections.
    • Questions: How would I describe our relationship? What am I proud of in my parenting? How can I enhance my bond with my mom?
  4. Friendships: Reflects on your social circles.
    • Questions: Are my friends fostering my growth? Am I authentic around them?
  5. Romantic Relationships: Encompasses romantic partnerships.
    • Questions: How have I engaged in my relationship lately? Can I improve our connection?
  6. Career & Business: Pertains to your professional life.
    • Questions: How can I enhance my work situation? What do colleagues think of me?
  7. Finances: Relates to your financial health and goals.
    • Questions: Am I financially literate? What recent expenses can I evaluate?
  8. Time Management & Habits: Involves daily routines.
    • Questions: Am I managing my time effectively? How is my week structured?
  9. Leisure & Fun: Focuses on enjoyment and relaxation.
    • Questions: What enjoyable activities do I schedule? Do I feel guilty for having fun?
  10. Contribution to Society: Reflects your impact on the world.
    • Questions: How am I giving back? What legacy am I building?

Chapter 5: Embracing Change with the Wheel

You might wonder if it’s overwhelming to address every area simultaneously. It can be, so it’s advisable to set a realistic course of action—perhaps focusing on one to three areas at a time.

Is the Wheel of Life truly a transformative tool? While I refer to it as a miracle tool, it ultimately serves as a catalyst for your own decisions. Each day presents an opportunity to take steps toward a more fulfilling existence. The Wheel fosters essential awareness and highlights your current standing. The power to elevate your scores lies within you.
