Three Essential Success Lessons from a Heron Encounter
Written on
Chapter 1: Embracing Change
During a recent stroll in the park, I was pleasantly surprised to spot a heron. Watching it attempt to catch fish, particularly as it finally succeeded towards the end of the video, offered me three vital insights about success.
The heron exemplified the importance of venturing into new areas to reach its objectives. It did not linger in one spot for long, instead continuously exploring until it found the optimal location to catch its meal. Similarly, we often remain stuck in jobs or relationships that no longer serve us, even if they once did.
To fulfill our ambitions, we must be open to making necessary changes. If our established routines are no longer effective, it's time to seek new paths. This exploration is an ongoing journey with no definitive endpoint; we must take small steps toward our aspirations and see where they lead.
Section 1.1: The Value of Persistence
The brief video I included does not capture every attempt the heron made to snag a fish. Many times, it submerged its beak only to come up empty or with something other than a fish. Yet, it persisted, ultimately succeeding in its quest.
Many of us, myself included, often harbor unrealistic expectations for instant success, leading to frustration when our efforts do not yield immediate results. However, giving up prematurely thwarts our chances of success. As Mickey Rooney famously said, "You always pass failure on your way to success."
We must remind ourselves that patience and persistence are essential for achieving our goals; setbacks are simply part of the journey.
Section 1.2: Staying Focused
In the video, the heron was singularly focused on catching a fish. It moved steadily to its target, eyes fixed on the water, until it spotted a fish to catch.
If you can relate, you may find it challenging to concentrate on one task at a time. I used to get sidetracked by social media, losing focus on my original goal. Now, I make a conscious effort to avoid distractions by silencing my phone and steering clear of social media when I need to concentrate.
It's astonishing how much more I accomplish when I limit distractions. Identify what diverts your attention and consider ways to reduce or eliminate those interruptions. You'll be amazed at how much easier it becomes to reach your goals when distractions are minimized!
Final Thoughts
I hope you enjoy the video of the blue heron as much as I enjoyed capturing it. Reflect on the three crucial lessons it imparts, and consider applying them to your own life:
- Embrace change when necessary.
- Be patient and persistent in the face of failure.
- Focus on a single task, eliminating distractions.
The first video showcases the Gil Scott Heron Bluesology troupe performing "A Prayer For Everybody" at The Orchard House on September 8, 2024, highlighting the themes of perseverance and unity.
The second video features "On Earth As In Heaven," a sermon by Ps Joel Heron delivered on June 5, 2022, offering insights into faith and determination.
