A Surprising Insight on Productivity and Willpower

The Paradox of Punctuality
In the 1970s, psychologist Daryl Bem conducted a fascinating study at Stanford University. He proposed an intriguing hypothesis: students who consistently submitted their assignments on time would also exhibit conscientious traits, such as maintaining cleanliness in their appearance. Bem specifically observed whether these punctual students wore clean socks while turning in their work. To his astonishment, the findings contradicted his expectations. Instead of a positive correlation, he found a strong negative relationship.
“Apparently, the students could either get their homework done or change their socks every day, but not both.” — Daryl Bem
The Experiment of Temptation
In the book Switch, an engaging experiment is described where two groups of students were presented with two bowls—one filled with freshly baked cookies and the other with carrots. The first group was instructed to resist the cookies, relying on willpower, while the second group was allowed to indulge in cookies but had to forgo the carrots.
After consuming their respective snacks, both groups were tasked with solving complex, deliberately unsolvable puzzles. The results were striking: those who resisted the cookies lasted about 20 minutes before giving up, while the cookie-eaters only persevered for 8 minutes. The difference wasn’t due to the cookies' flavor but rather the depletion of willpower.
Understanding Willpower
Baumeister (2012) termed this decline in willpower “ego depletion.” Research shows that willpower is a limited resource, akin to a muscle that can become fatigued. Engaging willpower in one area can diminish your ability to use it in another, even if those tasks are unrelated. However, establishing routines doesn't deplete willpower.
This helps explain why the students could either submit their assignments on time or change their socks, but not manage both tasks. Their willpower was spent on completing their work, leaving no energy for other tasks.
Optimizing Your Willpower
Fortunately, there are strategies to manage and enhance your willpower:
Prioritize Difficult Tasks
Given that willpower is finite, it’s beneficial to tackle your most challenging tasks first while your energy levels are high.
Establish Routines Gradually
Since routines don’t consume willpower, create them for repetitive tasks like personal hygiene and meditation. However, introduce new routines one at a time to avoid overwhelming yourself.
Strengthen Your Willpower
Just like a muscle, willpower can be trained. Practices such as Vipassana meditation, which requires maintaining a specific posture for an hour, help build mental endurance. Cold showers also serve as an effective method for strengthening resolve.
Maintain Glucose Levels
An empty stomach makes focusing difficult, as the saying in India goes, "bhukhe pet bhajan nhi hote." Consuming glucose-rich foods, like lemonade, can boost energy and willpower. Aim for healthy glucose sources, as excess can be detrimental.
Finally, the composition of meals in India often balances high and low glycemic index foods, promoting sustained energy release. For instance, consuming rice with ghee and lentils creates a steady energy supply, crucial for restoring willpower.
