Striving for Improvement: Embrace a Better You

Chapter 1: The Journey to Betterment
Welcome back! In this continuation, we will delve into ways to enhance your life by asking yourself critical questions. Remember, you can always seek divine guidance along the way.
As a believer, I trust that the divine is always present in our lives. You might call it something else if that resonates more with you. Regardless, acknowledging your creator and recognizing your place in the universe can lead to a harmonious existence.
In 2 Timothy 1:6–7, the apostle Paul communicates to his disciple Timothy, who has been mentored by him but now faces life independently. Feeling young and inexperienced, Timothy receives a reminder from Paul about the potential he possesses.
“For this reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:6–7). Don’t we all aspire to be more powerful, loving, and self-disciplined?
Understanding yourself—your origins and identity—is crucial.
You are blessed.
You possess unique gifts.
You are more significant than you realize.
You are connected to a greater whole than you can fathom.
By engaging with some questions, you can uncover these truths about yourself. While the questions may seem straightforward, the answers require deep honesty and introspection.
If you haven't yet explored Part 1, I encourage you to do so first. Here’s a link to that article.
Next, let's explore questions that will guide you in self-discovery.
Before diving in, consider taking a brief moment to clear your mind. Just a few seconds of stillness can do wonders. For seasoned meditators, feel free to take as long as you need.
Essential Values
Ask yourself: What truly matters in my life? What do I hold dear?
Make a quick list without overthinking. Avoid considering how your answers might be perceived by others. Focus solely on what is important to you.
It’s likely your list includes common priorities like health, love, relationships, financial stability, security, career, home, and experiences. Write everything down.
Remember, there’s no judgment here!
Once your list is complete, reflect on what stands out. Does it resonate with your authentic self, or do you worry about others’ opinions? Does that even matter?
Select your top three values—just three, or a maximum of five.
Significant Relationships
Now, contemplate: Who are the key individuals in your life?
Your list may include those who have passed or those currently alive. Consider who has significantly influenced you—friends, family, colleagues, mentors, or even adversaries.
Who stands out? Who have you not thought of in a while? Is there a chance to reconnect? What would you say to them? What would you want to hear back?
Make it a point to reach out, expressing your gratitude. Share your feelings, and if necessary, offer forgiveness.
You can connect in person, over the phone, or, if circumstances require, you can communicate without direct interaction. For instance, set an empty chair before you and converse as if they were present. Alternatively, you could write them a letter detailing their impact on your life.
Strengthen connections with those who have positively influenced you. If someone has had a negative effect on your life, consider this your opportunity to sever ties. Let go of their influence and move forward.
Defining Success
Next, think about your personal definition of success. This could be a single word or a detailed explanation. It may take some reflection, but previous answers should help clarify this for you.
Does your definition feel authentic, or does it echo what you think others expect?
The Holy Spirit, or the universe as you might prefer, can guide you in refining your thoughts. What brings you genuine joy?
Friendship Qualities
Consider the list of important people you just created. What characteristics do those who have positively impacted you share? What qualities would you prefer to avoid in yourself?
The golden rule comes to mind: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Reflect on what makes a good friend and how you can embody those traits.
“The best way to have good friends is to be one.”
This marks the start of your journey towards self-awareness and improvement. Review your lists and answers, reinforce the positive aspects, and strive to eliminate the negative influences as much as possible.
Part 3 will continue with additional questions that can catalyze growth in various areas of your life.
