Chapter 1 Introduction to Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony is once again aiming for the top of the wireless headphone market with its latest offering, the WH-1000XM5. With a fresh design and numerous enhancements, this headset is set to impress when it launches soon.
Despite the emergence of numerous strong contenders in the wireless headphone space over recent years—Apple being a notable rival—Sony has successfully retained its esteemed position within the premium market. The company has consistently refined its acclaimed WH-1000XM line, and after the nearly impeccable WH-1000XM4 of 2020, many, including myself, speculated on what innovations would be introduced in the eagerly awaited WH-1000XM5. With recent announcements from Sony, we finally have insight into these upgrades, though some details were revealed ahead of time.
The WH-1000XM5 features a markedly different design compared to its predecessors. It sports a more angular, aggressive look while maintaining an aesthetic appeal, particularly in black. The headband has been streamlined and is no longer foldable, which might disappoint frequent travelers. Additionally, the earcups are larger and more cushioned than before, all while keeping the overall weight light at just 250g.
Chapter 2 Enhanced Sound Experience
The new WH-1000XM5 headphones are equipped with specially designed Neodymium 30mm drivers featuring a light, rigid dome made from carbon fiber composite. This innovation improves high-frequency sensitivity, resulting in more natural sound quality. According to Sony, this model surpasses its predecessors in sound clarity and bass reproduction, regardless of the quality of the original audio. This advancement is made possible through the DSEE Extreme processing system, which upscales the fidelity of digital music files in real time. Audiophiles will also appreciate support for high-resolution audio via the LDAC codec, along with 360 Reality Audio compatibility.

Chapter 3 Superior Noise-Canceling Features
Renowned for their noise-canceling capabilities, the WH-1000XM series has seen further enhancements in the XM5 model. The headphones now feature two processors controlling eight microphones—an upgrade from the previous model's one processor and four microphones. This configuration significantly reduces noise, particularly in the mid-high frequency range. Moreover, an Auto NC Optimizer function adjusts noise cancellation settings automatically based on the listener's environment.
Sony's Voice Pickup technology employs four beamforming microphones and an AI noise reduction algorithm to accurately isolate the user’s voice. A new algorithm also addresses wind noise during calls, further enhancing the user experience.

Chapter 4 Smart Features and Connectivity
The WH-1000XM5 is equipped with several intelligent features designed to enhance the user experience. Adaptive Sound Control automatically adjusts sound settings based on the user’s location, while the Speak-to-Chat function detects when a user speaks, pausing the music and allowing ambient sound to come through. Once the conversation is finished, the music resumes. Additionally, the headphones pause playback when removed.
Pairing the WH-1000XM5 with devices is now easier than ever. The Fast Pair feature connects instantly to Android devices or Windows 10/11 PCs, while traditional Bluetooth facilitates connections with other devices. Users can connect two devices simultaneously, making it simple to switch between them with a single button press.
Regarding battery performance, the WH-1000XM5 impresses with 30 hours of playtime with noise-canceling activated (40 hours without). The USB-C port also supports the PD (Power Delivery) standard, allowing three hours of playback from just three minutes of charging.
Chapter 5 Conclusion: Is It Worth the Investment?
Although the WH-1000XM5 comes with a higher price tag than its predecessors, the myriad of improvements and enhancements justifies the cost—especially if sound quality has also improved. The WH-1000XM5 will launch in black and platinum silver later this month for €419/$399. It appears to be a strong contender for the best headphones of 2022.
