The Realities Behind Success: Luck vs. Hard Work
Written on
Chapter 1: The Misconception of Luck
The phrase "She got so lucky" is often echoed in discussions about success.
This sentiment is frequently expressed by those who admire successful figures from a distance, like the hip-hop enthusiast lounging on his couch, munching on chips while lamenting, "He was so lucky to get signed to that label. That's why he's topping the charts." Yet, this viewer, who harbored dreams of becoming a renowned rapper, never made any real effort to pursue his aspirations.
Section 1.1: The Importance of Being in the Right Place
Attributing others' achievements solely to luck reveals a detrimental mindset, suggesting that one is unlikely to reach similar heights. If you believe that success hinges mainly on chance, it’s probable that you will never achieve it.
Indeed, prominent rappers, investors, and athletes may have experienced a stroke of luck at certain points—perhaps they were signed by the right label, stumbled upon lucrative investments, or had exceptional coaches. However, what truly differentiates them from the passive observers is that they actively engaged in their fields, positioning themselves to seize opportunities when they arose.
If you don't make an effort to be present in the right environment, even the most fortuitous moments will pass you by unnoticed.
Section 1.2: Events vs. Processes
"It took me 17 years and 114 days to become an overnight success." — Lionel Messi
From an external perspective, one might only witness the high-profile moments that appear to be the result of luck, such as landing a contract with a prestigious team or selling a business for millions. These notable events can indeed be influenced by chance.
However, the unseen groundwork—countless hours of dedication and effort—precedes these moments, allowing individuals to put themselves in positions where luck can play a role. In reality, the notion of luck and "overnight success" often serves as a convenient narrative for those who shy away from the hard work required to achieve their goals.
