A Pleasant Day for an Apocalypse: A Journey of Overthinking

Chapter 1: A Road Trip to Remember
Today is off to a fantastic start! My friend and I are embarking on a little adventure through the southern plains, aiming for the Rockies to unwind and soak in the refreshing mountain air. With a week of work-free bliss ahead, we’ve got some great music playing and a delightful summer breeze flowing through the car windows. Everything feels carefree!
As we crest a hill, we’re greeted by a stunning view of windmills—though not the quaint ones from old western films. Instead, these are colossal turbines, harnessing the wind for energy. They stretch out as far as the eye can see, their synchronized spinning is quite a sight. I’ve learned these giants stand over 20 stories tall, but from a distance, their size is deceptive, except for a few close to the road. They’re absolutely massive!
The sight captivates my friend, who exclaims, “Awesome!”
In response, I say, “It’s like a thousand huge planes preparing for takeoff!”
He nods, returning his focus to driving while I can't help but ponder the implications of these massive propellers. If they were attached to aircraft, they’d generate thrust, propelling them forward. Yet, these turbines are fixed to the ground, transferring all that power into the Earth. Isn’t that fascinating?
I voice my musings to my buddy, who responds, “Yeah, that’s interesting,” but he seems unfazed.
Yet, I can’t shake the thought—how much thrust would it take to slightly alter the Earth’s rotation? What if the impact of these spinning propellers was too minuscule to notice at first? Maybe a year goes by, and suddenly our 24-hour days become one second shorter. People might overlook it, but eventually, someone would have to catch on, right? Scientists are always monitoring time. But what if they don’t understand the cause and keep it under wraps to avoid mass panic?
Then, after another year, the days shrink by three seconds, and the news spreads like wildfire. Panic ensues as folks wonder about the implications—drought? Famine? Disease? Or something worse?
Everything on Earth relies on a 24-hour cycle, so how chaotic could it become with a shift in rotation? The government might try to calm the masses with reassurances and strategies to counteract the change, but would they truly have a grasp on the situation? After all, they played a part in this catastrophe!
I realize my hands are clenched tight, so I take a moment to breathe.
What else could happen if the Earth’s axis wobbles? Would gravity be affected? What if it caused our planet to drift away from the sun, leading us to the brink of extinction?!
Panic spreads like wildfire. While some feel relief seeing global warming reverse, they’re oblivious to the sun’s diminishing size!
When they finally notice, chaos erupts—people will burn anything for warmth, while gravity potentially fails, leaving everything—humans, animals, debris—floating aimlessly, blocking out the dwindling light.
I’m sweating and gasping for air when my friend shakes me, asking, “Hey, are you okay? What’s wrong?”
I spill my theories about the propeller thrust disrupting the Earth’s rotation—end times, cows drifting through the sky. He just shakes his head.
“Dude, you know the wind doesn’t blow uniformly everywhere, right? So, even if those turbines had any effect, which is highly doubtful, it would be neutralized by others spinning in different directions globally.”
“Yeah,” I reply, “That makes total sense. I can’t believe I didn’t consider that.”
