Master Your Time: Avoiding the Trap of Yak Shaving

Understanding Yak Shaving
The concept of "Yak Shaving" was introduced by Carlin Vieri during his time at MIT, inspired by a segment from the 1991 Nickelodeon series "The Ren & Stimpy Show," specifically the "Yak Shaving Day" episode.
What is Yak Shaving?
Yak Shaving refers to the phenomenon where you find yourself tangled in a web of minor tasks that seem somewhat related to your primary goal, yet distract you from completing it. For instance, while attempting to write this article, I encountered a series of distractions:
“I decided to write a blog post and grabbed my laptop.”
“Upon opening my editor, I noticed that Alfred (a Mac productivity app) required an update, so I initiated it.”
“This update needed my license key, which I had stored in Evernote, prompting me to open that app.”
“Evernote, in turn, needed an update before I could access my key, so I started that process.”
“After the update, I retrieved my key and resumed the Alfred update.”
“While this was happening, I remembered that my laptop was lagging during video calls, which led me to research a solution involving Onyx.”
“I downloaded, configured, and ran Onyx, all before my day truly began.”
“By the time I was ready to write, it was already time for my meetings, leaving no time for actual writing!”
Sound Familiar?
This scenario illustrates two distinct patterns related to Yak Shaving. The first involves tasks that directly support the completion of the main task, creating a strong connection between them. The second pattern, which often leads to procrastination, consists of tasks that do not necessarily help complete the original goal, yet create an illusion of necessity, resulting in a sense of constant busyness.
I engaged in a bit of “yak shaving” this morning, and while it may have felt productive, I ultimately spent the entire day busy yet achieved nothing of significance.
Recognizing the Signs
Do you often find yourself exclaiming, “I’m so busy, I have no time”? You might be caught in the Yak Shaving trap. It’s crucial to identify this pattern and redirect your focus before you spiral down the “rabbit hole” of distractions.
“It is not enough to be busy; so are the ants. The question is: What are we busy about?” — Henry David Thoreau
