Exploring Top Alternatives to AirTags for Android Devices

Chapter 1: Introduction to Tracker Alternatives
If you’re using an Android device, you may have noticed that Apple’s AirTag has few rivals that match its functionality. However, there are still several options worth considering. Recently, I’ve been searching for a reliable tracker compatible with my Pixel 7 Pro. During my exploration, I stumbled upon various products, including a humorous concept design for a Google tracker dubbed the "GSpot." Although it would be fantastic if Google introduced a tracker with features like Google Maps integration, it seems unlikely in the near future.
This prompted me to test three prominent alternatives: the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag+, Tile, and Chipolo. Here’s what I discovered.
Section 1.1: Samsung Galaxy SmartTag+
The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag+ is a solid device featuring impressive battery life and a user-friendly app that can also track other Samsung devices. However, the catch is that it works best with compatible Samsung phones, leaving my Pixel 7 Pro out of the loop. This seems like a lost opportunity, considering how well it could perform with broader compatibility.
As of now, the Galaxy SmartTag+ retails for £39.99, which feels a bit steep compared to the Tile Pro, priced at £29.99. The SmartTag+ includes innovative features such as augmented reality (AR) for locating your items and a button that can control various smart home devices, like turning on your lights as you approach your home.
Section 1.2: Tile Trackers
I’ve been a Tile user since 2016, when I first purchased a tracker to keep tabs on my keys and wallet. They’ve been worthwhile investments, though I initially disliked that the battery couldn't be replaced—something Tile now offers in select models. After transitioning away from Apple products, I’ve been using the KeySmart Max, an excellent key organizer with an integrated Tile tracker that is rechargeable.
However, the KeySmart Max lacks a low-battery notification feature, which often leads to me forgetting to recharge it. I also own the Tile Slim from 2020, designed to fit conveniently in a wallet. Unfortunately, I had to discontinue using it recently due to a dead battery after three years of use—something I expected, but it’s unfortunate that the battery isn’t replaceable.
Among these options, Tile tends to be the priciest, particularly if you want additional features that require a monthly subscription. The premium plan costs either £2.99 per month or £29.99 annually, offering perks like smart alerts for misplaced items and free battery replacements. While the subscription isn’t too costly, I feel similar features should be available without additional fees.
Subsection 1.2.1: Chipolo
I’ve only had firsthand experience with one official Chipolo product, though I do own the Ekster Wallet Tracker, which uses Chipolo technology. The Ekster tracker is a commendable product featuring a built-in solar panel for recharging, a fantastic concept! Interestingly, the official Chipolo card lacks this feature, but it typically offers a replaceable battery, which is a plus over the Tile Slim.
I appreciate the Chipolo app for its clean design and user-friendly interface. However, one drawback is that if you sign up with an Apple account, you can’t log in on an Android device. To work around this, I had to create a new account and share the device, which unfortunately means losing out on out-of-range alerts. This limitation is disappointing and may not be entirely within Chipolo’s control.
Chapter 2: Final Thoughts
After experimenting with the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag+, various Tile models, and the Ekster Smart Card with Chipolo, I’ve concluded that none of these trackers can compete with the Apple AirTag's performance. Nevertheless, manufacturers like Samsung, Chipolo, and Tile are making commendable strides in the market.
Each tracker has its pros and cons. The SmartTag+ is intriguing with its ability to control smart home devices and utilize AR for finding lost items, but it lacks compatibility with my Pixel 7 Pro. While I appreciate the Tile products, their competitors are advancing rapidly, and I dislike the idea of paying a recurring subscription fee.
My limited experience with Chipolo, primarily through the Ekster Wallet Card, suggests it can serve as a reasonable alternative to the AirTag. Ultimately, I remain undecided on the best choice, as each brand presents unique advantages. I hope Google will eventually introduce a versatile tracker that’s compatible with multiple devices and includes practical features.
