Enhancing Habit Formation: Making the Attractive Choices

Chapter 1: The Importance of Attractiveness in Habits

In our journey toward self-improvement, we often overlook the significance of making our desired actions appealing. This is the second step in the process of habit formation.

While indulging in junk food or watching explicit content may initially seem enjoyable, the experience often falls short of true satisfaction. I’ve faced similar struggles, battling daily temptations and failing to make positive choices despite being young and vibrant.

Yet, a breakthrough occurred when I discovered "Atomic Habits" by James Clear—an enlightening guide that provided me with practical strategies for self-improvement.

As we progress through the four steps of habit formation, we arrive at craving—the desire to attain something. This craving follows the initial cue or trigger and can evoke strong emotions. For instance, the mere thought of watching explicit content can quicken your heartbeat, while the idea of indulging in a hamburger can make your stomach growl.

Cravings and triggers

We should aim to cultivate cravings for positive actions while developing aversions to detrimental habits. Interestingly, I've become so disciplined with my diet that I no longer feel tempted by sweets. Although it may be challenging at first, persistence will make it easier over time.

But how do we shift our cravings toward beneficial habits and away from harmful ones? The answer lies in making the positive choices more appealing and the negative ones less so. Even after multiple readings of the book, I sometimes find myself confused about the distinction between making something attractive and simply making it obvious.

To clarify, consider this: if you hang a picture of a fit individual near your workout space, or set your phone's lock screen to an image of your fitness goal, those visuals serve as cues. They remind you of the rewards associated with consistent exercise.

Motivation through visualization

Merely seeing your gym bag and picturing yourself lifting weights might drain your motivation, especially if the habit hasn’t been established yet. However, envisioning the benefits of sticking to your routine can provide not just motivation, but also a strong reason to exercise your discipline.

This strategy can be applied to countless other habits. For example, if you dread going to work but are promised double your usual salary, that challenging task suddenly becomes more appealing.

Thus, by enhancing the attractiveness of your habits, you can make the initiation of those habits much easier. Conversely, you can also diminish the allure of bad habits by portraying them as unappealing and unfulfilling.
