Embracing Simplicity Over Productivity Apps: A Personal Journey

Chapter 1: The Quest for the Perfect App
In my pursuit of an ideal app to streamline my life, I’ve come to a significant conclusion: I'm done searching for the perfect productivity tool.
Initially, I toggled between various applications like Things, Reminders, Todoist, and Notion. However, after experiencing the cycle of switching back and forth, I landed on Apple’s Reminders app. This journey made me realize that I struggle with productivity tools. The allure of each new app often tricked me into believing it would finally deliver the efficiency I craved. Yet, I suspect that the emphasis on to-do apps is overstated, as many of us tackle tasks as they arise.
For some, daily lists serve as gentle nudges, while others may rely on calendar apps to manage their responsibilities. At my workplace, Outlook remains the primary tool for tracking tasks. Conversations with friends and observations of my colleagues reveal a different reality; few speak about relying on productivity apps. Instead, couples often use shared notes or cloud documents, such as Google Docs, to manage their tasks. My wife and I, for example, utilize AnyList for grocery shopping and other necessary purchases.
Section 1.1: Party Planning Made Simple
As my son’s second birthday approached, we opted for a simple shared note in the Notes app to list everything that needed attention before the event. There was no shared reminders list or a Notion page filled with plans; just a straightforward checklist that we diligently worked through each day.

Section 1.2: The Hype vs. Reality of Productivity Apps
The hype surrounding productivity apps seems to thrive on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and various podcasts. I doubt many people even utilize the built-in Reminder apps on their devices. Most of us seem to favor calendars and notes, or we simply tackle tasks as they come up, without tracking them at all.
For me, the Reminders app serves as a tool to jog my memory when I forget tasks, nudging me until I finally complete them. I set reminders to prompt me about obligations at work or home, with notifications arriving when I’m near either location. However, it doesn’t always work immediately, and it may take me several days to follow through. Nonetheless, the persistent alerts hold me accountable in the end.
Chapter 2: Finding Balance in a Busy Life
I don’t habitually review my tasks, nor do I plan my chores or writing projects. The Reminders app is a resource I use as needed; I refuse to force myself into reliance on an app for productivity.
Perhaps it’s parenthood that has shifted my perspective, or maybe it’s the realization that these apps can sometimes be more hindrance than help. Tools like Things or Notion may benefit those who are self-employed or require stringent organization, but for me, I prefer to live beyond the confines of an app. If I miss a task, I trust that I will eventually address it.
