Walking has often been praised for its numerous advantages, and for good reason.

You may have heard that walking can lead to:

  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Toned muscles, especially in your calves

Initially, these were my motivations for adopting a walking routine. Just a month after giving birth, I found myself struggling to keep up with my toddler after a long period of inactivity. I was eager to regain my fitness.

So, I applied sunscreen while still bleary-eyed from a sleepless night, loaded my stroller, and embarked on our daily trek at 8:30 a.m. to avoid the sweltering Colorado sun. These morning walks soon became a staple in my daily routine.

I managed to stick with it for over a week, pushing through sleep deprivation and making myself somewhat presentable to avoid judgment from neighbors. With my Fitbit tracking my progress, I averaged about 30 minutes and nearly 1.5 miles each day. However, the statistics aren't what truly matters.

What truly changed for me through this morning walking habit was:

Each morning, I faced a battle with my alarm clock. Should I hit snooze or get up? I realized that sleeping in meant waking up to the chaos of a crying newborn and a toddler eager for attention, leading to a frustrating start to my day.

Historically, I would take the easy way out whenever challenges arose. However, I recognized that a life spent in comfort zones is rarely fulfilling. Even on days when motivation was low, I donned my leggings and hit the path.

Instead of the usual playlist, I opted for podcasts. Every day brought fresh perspectives from educational and motivational speakers, addressing topics like overcoming self-doubt and resilience during tough times. Listening to interviews with successful entrepreneurs ignited my creativity and energy, setting a positive tone for my day.

Remember, walking might not be your path, but I encourage you to seek out an activity that brings you joy or boosts your productivity.
