Embracing Laziness: 7 Unique Productivity Hacks for the Modern Age
Written on
Chapter 1: The Lazy Productivity Mindset
My mother would definitely describe me as one of the laziest individuals she knows. In my defense, I believe she might just be a bit too energetic! How does her generation manage to keep up that pace? I often feel that our screen-obsessed generation has forgotten how to be active.
Nonetheless, I still manage to get things done. I’m productive, but I prefer a more relaxed approach. I've realized that I’m not the type to grind away for 12 hours; instead, I focus on working efficiently for 4 hours and maximizing that time.
Here are seven strategies I employ to stay productive without overexerting myself. If you're a fellow procrastinator, you'll appreciate these tips.
Section 1.1: Automate Your Life
I rely on Siri to set my reminders, eliminating the need for me to pick up my phone and get distracted by notifications. Tools like Hypefury automate my Twitter feed, ensuring that my content is consistently active, whether I'm awake or asleep. I also plan to utilize this tool for my LinkedIn posts soon.
Gumroad helps me manage my newsletters automatically, so I don’t find myself overwhelmed every weekend with what to send out. Weekends are meant for enjoyment, after all! Focus on automating tasks to dedicate your energy to more significant projects.
Section 1.2: Delegate Mundane Tasks
After hearing advice from my friend Scott Stockdale, I decided to hire a Virtual Assistant through Upwork to handle tasks I’d rather not do. These tasks include:
- Copy-pasting article links into a tracker
- Creating certificates for my course participants
- Transcribing Twitter threads into Google Docs
- Compiling course content from documents into Canva
I enjoy organizing my work, so I try to outsource the tasks that consume too much of my time. Now, Vivian manages these tasks efficiently for me!
Subsection 1.2.1: Leveraging Expertise
I find joy in being creative and using tools like Canva. However, I know there are others who excel far beyond my skills. For example, I recently hired Arpit, who once purchased my first paid ebook, to enhance the design of my LinkedIn Playbook. He completed the task exceptionally well.
What might be a struggle for me is often an easy task for someone else. Focus on your strengths and those of others around you.
Section 1.3: The Power of Weekly Reflection
For the past two years, I’ve been using a beautifully designed yearly planner filled with stickers and interactive elements—my love for stationery has certainly paid off! Each weekend, I respond to reflective prompts, such as:
- How did my week go?
- What successes did I achieve, and what challenges did I encounter?
- What will I do differently in the coming week?
This practice allows me to prioritize my tasks and begin each week with clarity.
Section 1.4: Learn from the Experts
The quickest way to gain knowledge is often through a simple Google search or a YouTube video, but the most effective method is to ask someone who's already succeeded. Before launching my LinkedIn Playbook, I sought insights from friends who represent my target audience.
Individuals like Anangsha Alammyan, Ash Jurberg, and Jim Burgess provided invaluable input that shaped my project. Though it might seem daunting to reach out to people online, you’d be surprised at how approachable they can be if you engage genuinely.
Section 1.5: The Importance of Downtime
I reserve my afternoons for relaxation—watching Netflix, browsing YouTube, or taking a nap. Sometimes, doing absolutely nothing is essential.
Over-scheduling can be exhausting. Taking time to unwind can lead to renewed energy and fresh ideas when you return to work.
Section 1.6: Avoid Re-inventing the Wheel
Chances are, whatever project you're tackling has already been tackled by someone else. Why put yourself through unnecessary struggles? Learning from others and applying their wisdom can accelerate your progress more than trial and error.
Remember, having an idea is just the beginning; what matters is how you execute it.
