Embracing Change: Three Habits I Let Go to Transform My Life

Written on

Chapter 1: The Joy of Solitude

I enjoy taking my dogs for walks during the early evening hours when the air is refreshingly cool, and there are fewer people around. It's not that I shy away from social interactions; rather, I relish the chance to reflect, exercise, and embrace solitude. There's something enchanting about a crisp winter night, where the stars twinkle overhead, a gentle breeze brushes against my skin, and the tranquil surroundings amplify my sense of existence.

My dogs are a great reminder to appreciate the present. Their exceptional sense of smell and keen hearing allow them to perceive so much about their environment. They can detect the presence of rabbits long before I can and distinguish between coyote droppings and what our neighbor's pug has left behind.

As we meander through the park, past the waterfall, and back through the neighborhood, I can't help but notice the glow of large flat-screen televisions illuminating the living rooms we pass. Almost invariably, these screens are tuned to cable news channels.

The Dilemma of News Consumption

I used to be an avid follower of the news. In addition to my online subscriptions, I would frequently watch cable news and opinion segments. However, over time, I noticed a disturbing shift in their tone. Constructive discourse gave way to loud, partisan debates, and the integrity of journalism seemed to diminish as networks openly leaned toward bias.

People gravitate toward news outlets that resonate with their political views, often remaining unaware that they are ensnared in echo chambers of agreement. Even attempting to watch opposing networks became unbearable for my wife and me.

By the end of 2019, we decided to stop watching cable news entirely. Initially, I felt a sense of missing out during conversations about current events, but I soon recognized that what I was truly missing was the incessant bickering. I retained a few online newspaper subscriptions, which provided all the information I needed without the overwhelming commercials and repetitive narratives of cable news. I could read everything in under an hour each morning.

"A good reader or viewer is someone who critically engages with their news source." — Ravish Kumar

Sure, major news events receive extensive coverage, but I realized that often these "breaking news" stories could be summarized in a few paragraphs the following day. Cable news, much like social media, is crafted to keep you hooked, leading you to endure endless commercials just to catch the latest segment.

What could you achieve with the time spent glued to cable news? How many books could you read, workouts could you complete, or creative projects could you pursue? After quitting cable news, I found I had significantly more time for reading, writing, art, and photography. While my wife and I still enjoy good movies and series, stepping away from cable news has positively impacted our lives.

Exploring Alcohol's Impact

During my university days, beer was my drink of choice, conveniently pairing with pizza. Eventually, I developed a taste for fine wine, savoring a glass of Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon with steak or a chilled Sauvignon Blanc by the pool. In the later years of my law enforcement career, my wife and I began experimenting with craft cocktails, enjoying evenings with friends over Manhattans.

Yet, I noticed the toll alcohol could take, particularly when hangovers followed nights of revelry. My father was never a drinker, and while my mother came from a family where drinking was common, she struggled with it throughout her life.

I witnessed firsthand the harm alcohol can cause, especially in law enforcement. Although I made efforts to moderate my consumption, moving to Las Vegas presented its challenges. Surrounded by vibrant nightlife and a culture that embraced drinking, I initially joined in on the fun but quickly realized I was treading a dangerous path.

After a few wild parties, I decided to stop drinking altogether. Fortunately, it wasn't a difficult transition; I didn't experience cravings and found my friends to be supportive. The outcome? I lost weight, improved my sleep, enhanced my focus, and became significantly more productive in my creative endeavors.

"When you quit drinking, you stop waiting." — Caroline Knapp

While responsible drinking can be enjoyable, abstaining from alcohol has brought transformative benefits to my life.

Letting Go of Envy

As a child, I experienced jealousy when my best friend received a new Schwinn bicycle for his birthday. Despite owning a nice BMX bike, I longed for the cool features of my friend's.

"Never underestimate the power of jealousy to destroy." — Oliver Stone

Though I initially avoided my friend, I eventually learned the value of relationships over material possessions. When my friend's father passed away, I realized how fortunate I was to still have mine.

The idea that "Comparison is the thief of joy" resonates deeply. When we compare ourselves to others, we often fixate on what we lack instead of appreciating what we have. With maturity, I learned to release unhealthy comparisons, focusing instead on inspiring qualities in others that I could aspire to emulate.

I’ve reached a stage in life where material possessions no longer matter to me; I value character and creativity. When I read a powerful piece of writing, I analyze the techniques used to enhance my own skills. When I meet someone impressive, I reflect on their attributes and strive to cultivate those qualities in myself.

Conclusion: A Life of Purpose

By relinquishing cable news, alcohol, and unhealthy comparisons, I have become healthier, happier, and more productive in my personal and creative life.

Consider this: What habits might you let go of that could significantly enhance your life? Letting go of detrimental habits can open the door to new aspirations and ultimately lead to a more fulfilling existence.

"We all live in a house on fire, no fire department to call." — Tennessee Williams

Deep down, we often recognize the harmful patterns that hold us back. The longer we resist change, the more trapped we feel. Don't let your life be consumed by flames. Take that leap, even if it involves some discomfort. Release what hinders your progress; your dreams are waiting.
