Discover Glasp: A Social Web Highlighter for Knowledge Sharing
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to Glasp
I recently came across Glasp, a fascinating application designed for sharing online insights while also learning from others. Essentially, it functions like a social platform, but instead of posting vacation photos, users share valuable highlights and concepts they encounter online. Given my enthusiasm for this idea, I felt it was worth discussing further. Additionally, Glasp allows you to export your highlights to Obsidian, a feature that’s particularly appealing to users like myself who value integration with such tools. The best part? Glasp is entirely free.
Section 1.1: What is Glasp?
As previously mentioned, Glasp serves as a social network where users can follow one another and gain followers in return. The unique aspect of this platform is its focus on publishing web highlights, which provide genuinely useful content. For instance, if I stumble upon an interesting quote in a Medium article, I can save it as a highlight. This quote then appears in my feed, making it accessible to my followers.
Here’s a glimpse of Glasp's interface:
Section 1.2: The Purpose of Glasp
The primary advantage of using Glasp is its focus on sharing knowledge rather than keeping it confined to individual use. The creators aim to combat the isolation of knowledge. If insights and experiences are stored solely in personal apps, they become inaccessible after one’s lifetime. While you might share your notes at the end of your life, the timing is uncertain. The collective learning of humanity has progressed through shared knowledge across generations, and it would be a significant loss if we couldn't access what individuals have learned throughout their lives.
I completely agree—there’s no reason to hoard knowledge when sharing it is so simple. Glasp allows you to connect with individuals who share your interests, opening up new avenues to discover useful information through their feeds.
Moreover, Glasp functions as a comprehensive highlights manager, enabling you to organize your highlights with notes, tags, and more.
The first video showcases how to highlight web pages using Glasp, demonstrating its user-friendly interface and key features.
Section 1.3: Getting Started with Glasp
To begin using Glasp, simply create an account on their website. Following that, install the Glasp Chrome extension, which facilitates highlighting web content and storing these highlights directly on your profile.
Once set up, you can highlight any web page, and your highlights will automatically be published on your profile.
Chapter 2: Exploring Glasp's Features
The second video provides a tutorial on using the Glasp Chrome extension, highlighting its functionalities and how to maximize the tool for efficient note-taking.
Section 2.1: Heatmap Feature
The heatmap feature offers a visual representation of your daily highlights, allowing you to click on specific days to see the highlights you added.
Section 2.2: Tagging System
Tags simplify the organization of your highlights, enabling quick searches. They also manifest in an atomic graph, providing a visual overview of your tags. Clicking on any node will lead you to the corresponding highlights.
Section 2.3: Explore Tab
The "Explore" tab lets you discover resources related to specific topics. Within these resources, you can view all the highlights and comments from other users.
Section 2.4: My Highlights
This section allows you to review your highlights and access saved articles, Kindle highlights, and video highlights.
Additionally, you can export your highlights in various formats, including Markdown for use in Obsidian.
Section 2.5: Video Highlighting
With the Glasp Chrome extension, you can also highlight video content. The extension generates a transcript, allowing you to highlight text just like you would in articles. Moreover, you can utilize the OpenAI logo to access ChatGPT for video summaries.
Final Thoughts
While Glasp is still in its beta phase, it shows great potential. It encompasses all the features I seek in a web highlighter, along with additional functionalities and the chance to share highlights for mutual learning. I plan to continue exploring its capabilities in the coming weeks to determine if it will fit into my workflow. If you're interested in trying Glasp, you can do so by visiting their website.
