The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), alongside the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI, began investigating the matter to determine the underlying cause. National Security Adviser John Kirby stated, “We will thoroughly examine this situation. Our collaboration with industry experts aims to uncover the details, but as of now, AT&T does not perceive this as a cybersecurity threat.” He emphasized that there was no indication of any unusual activities from state or non-state actors prior to the incident.
The outages reportedly began around 4 a.m. EST, with over 70,000 reports logged by 8 a.m. on the tracking site DownDetector.com. Ultimately, it was estimated that approximately 1.7 million customers experienced disruptions. As investigations unfolded, initial assessments suggested human error might be to blame rather than a cyber attack, although this conclusion could evolve as further information emerges.
AT&T spokesperson Jim Greer mentioned, “The outage started peaking early Thursday morning, accumulating tens of thousands of reports on DownDetector, reaching its highest point shortly after 9 a.m. Eastern. The volume of reports gradually declined throughout the morning, and service was fully restored by around 3 p.m.”
