Anticipating the Mind-Bending Twists of Severance Season 2

Chapter 1: Recap of Season 1
Severance (2022) stands out as a captivating and award-winning psychological thriller and dark comedy series from Apple TV+, brought to life by Ben Stiller. With Season 2 expected to premiere in late 2024 or early 2025, filming is currently underway. I've recently revisited the first season, and it remains just as engaging as ever.
So, what intriguing developments might unfold in Season 2, especially considering the dramatic cliffhanger we were left with?
Chapter 1.1: Key Events from Season 1
Before we dive into predictions for the upcoming season, let’s recap some significant moments from Season 1.
As a reminder, in the finale, Dylan managed to switch three of their "outies" into their "innies" through Lumon’s OverTime Contingency (OTC) mode. The ultimate aim was to expose Lumon's exploitative treatment of its severed employees, characterized by absurd rules and psychological manipulation.
- Mark had a shocking realization just moments before the finale ended: Miss Casey, his presumed deceased spouse, is alive. He ambiguously calls out to Devon and Ricken, which could lead them to think he's referring to their almost kidnapped child. Furthermore, he disclosed to Ms. Cobel that he’s active in "innie" mode.
- Helly's identity was dramatically revealed; she is an Egan, the heir to the Lumon empire, who publicly denounced the treatment of innies at a gala event.
- Irving’s journey to Burt’s home was abruptly interrupted, leaving him back at Lumon as an "outie."
- Dylan was caught by Milchick and faces serious consequences.
- Ms. Cobel recalibrated her focus towards Lumon, raising alarms about the situation.
- Devon now understands Lumon’s dark realities and is likely to alert the authorities.
Chapter 2: The Future of Severance
As filming continues for Season 2, I find myself contemplating the possible directions the story might take.
It would be disheartening to see the MDR team disbanded, although this seems likely unless the plot is carefully crafted to allow them to reunite. Moreover, any returning characters may experience a reset, erasing their memories of past events.
How will Lumon respond to Helly’s explosive revelation? Will they dismiss her claims as the actions of a rogue "innie"? It’s plausible that they might reset her memories to maintain control.
As for Irving, he never got the chance to share his discoveries, so he might arrive at work with no awareness of the changes. Dylan is in a similar predicament, likely to face a reset as well.
This leaves us with Mark. Devon is now aware of Lumon’s evils, even if she misinterpreted his exclamation regarding Ms. Casey. It’s hard to imagine Mark returning to work unless he’s curious to see the unfolding events.
The mysterious significance of Mark to Lumon and Ms. Cobel remains unresolved. There’s a possibility they could orchestrate a situation where Devon and Ricken's deaths are faked, thereby integrating them as full-time "innies."
Envision an exciting opening scene for Season 2 where a reset "innie" Mark encounters "innie" Devon and "innie" Ricken:
"Hi, I’m Mark S. Which department are you from?"
However, a fundamental issue persists: resetting employees risks compromising the entire program, as it would alarm colleagues who notice staff failing to recognize each other.
I am concerned that the series could devolve into a predictable “fugitive on the run” narrative, which would be a dull departure from its unique premise.
Nevertheless, Ben Stiller has hinted at a return of the MDR team to the Severance floor. For this to happen, they may need to fake Mark’s death. Despite reported conflicts within the writing team, I’m optimistic that Stiller's crew will craft an impressive Season 2.
Ultimately, I envision a scenario where Mark and Devon expose Lumon’s inner workings to the authorities. While this resolution would be satisfying, we still want to see the MDR team reunite, though I suspect resetting is inevitable.
What will happen to Mark’s complicated romantic entanglements? He finds himself at the center of a four-way love triangle involving Jemma/Casel, Helly, and Devon’s friend.
I remain intrigued by Ricken and his eccentric followers, particularly Rebec, who claims to have mysterious holes in her head caused by a bird attack. Could she be a secret experiment of Severance?
