Achieving Enlightenment: A Path to Awakening and Clarity

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Enlightenment

The term "Enlightenment" is frequently used by many spiritual seekers and self-proclaimed guides. But who can determine what constitutes enlightenment, or whether it truly exists? In the context of Essential Zen (EZ), we prefer the term "Awakened" to describe a profound understanding of the essence and significance of all things, including a connection to the Sacred. This notion can extend to a deep comprehension of the creative force or a transformative state of consciousness where unity is perceived in all things. In Eastern philosophies, concepts such as liberation from the mind, the absence of ego, the pursuit of truth, joy, and unconditional love are often equated with Enlightenment.

Various spiritual traditions concur that achieving an Awakened State cannot be attained solely through rigid beliefs, intellectual reasoning, rituals, or altruistic actions. Being Awakened involves a level of clarity and awareness that is so distinct and deep that it becomes ineffable. It transcends physical existence, entering a realm characterized by emptiness, non-duality, and unconditioned reality. This state transcends the ego and individual self, culminating in the realization of the oneness of observer and observed, where suffering ceases to exist. Within this state, what we perceive as reality transforms into an illusion.

How does one attain Awakening? The truth is, you don't; an Awakened State simply occurs. The Japanese term "satori" encapsulates this sudden moment of clarity or understanding. If an Enlightened Being exists, they undoubtedly possess a clear self-awareness that does not rely on external validation. Many esteemed sages assert that "the Enlightenment that can be articulated is not true Enlightenment." This Awakened State simply "Is." The enlightenment of a spiritual teacher holds little relevance in this discussion, as such individuals typically have undergone a vast array of experiences that transcend conventional perception and interaction with the world.

Many of these experiences are accessible and understandable to everyone. Peak experiences, emotional highs, and various altered states of consciousness are available to those willing to embrace them. However, many of these experiences elude accurate verbal description; they exist beyond language and must be felt in their true essence.

The Game Theory Perspective

Essential Zen (EZ), the spiritual journey I have embraced, stands out as one of the most logical and scientific paths. Here, "Science" refers to a systematic method of acquiring knowledge that allows for consistent prediction of outcomes. This definition helps establish a "scientific body of knowledge" based on research results.

In EZ, acknowledging the merit of logical scientific reasoning while recognizing its limitations is crucial. Game Theory, a concept frequently employed by EZ practitioners, provides a scientific framework for understanding how individuals and groups make decisions when the actions of one or more individuals may influence the outcome. In EZ, transitioning between realities is essential as you engage with others who hold differing beliefs about truth, fact, morality, ethics, sensibility, practicality, rationality, and probability. By defining what constitutes a "game," unique worldviews can be categorized, and the players within these games can be identified.

To navigate a game effectively, players must develop strategies and action plans. Just as rules require consistency, each participant is likely to adopt a strategy they believe to be most effective, remaining steadfast in their approach. The ability to formulate a reliable, consistent strategy is partly determined by one's comprehension of the rules, codes, and perceived strategies of other players or opponents.

The Key Takeaway

In EZ practice, your mind can often be your most formidable adversary. Strategies for overcoming this include meditation, detachment, the study of kōans, the expression of love, and adopting a "chop wood, carry water" mindset. Understanding the roles of contradiction, paradox, and ambiguity is essential for crafting a functional and balanced personal reality, allowing you to succeed while supporting others in their journey as well.
